the future

this poem took me forever to finish. not because it was incredibly long, but because i didn't really know how to tie it all together at the end. it's still not perfect, but i think there's something to be said for perfection in imperfection. enjoy!

---

we're so

preoccupied

with the

future

that we

forget to

focus

on the present

to focus on

the butterflies

in my stomach

or your eyes

full of stars

the way your

lips curve

upwards

involuntarily

when i say something

stupid

we forget to

focus

on the

roses that we

walk past

holding hands

at the end of

summer

the kisses that

pass between us

quickly

we take them

for granted

you'll be

gone

in the fall

we forget to

focus

on the things

we say

the cheesy lines

and laughter

the spaghetti

we shared

and took a picture

eating a noodle

on both ends

the evening

we spent

in a bookshop

and the one

we spent

stargazing

we forget to

focus

on the

reality

on the way your

hand

feels in

mine

and the way

i can't help

staring at you

when you aren't

watching

i know you noticed

we're so

focused

on what we will do

tomorrow

that we forget

what we're doing

today

right now

is what counts

we do not have

forever

we do not have

tomorrow

and we can

wish

all we want

for "tomorrow"

but the future means

nothing

until you get there
