pompous kid

i'm a

goofy one

with my

nose

forever pressed

between the

pages

of a book

tolstoy

bronte

shakespeare

i live in

worlds

that some people

never explore

i walk on

walls

and i marry

princes

i sneak through

castles

and run across

marshes

dear readers

i'm not a

sporty kid

i'm a

smart one

some people have

commits

while i'm on

committees

some people are

playing water polo

while i'm

planning parties

they're on

fun runs

while i'm

thinking up

fundraisers

dear readers

i'm not

"cool"

i don't

smoke or vape

or drink underage

i stay

holed up

in my bedroom

dancing on top

of trains

through fairytales

dear readers

my idols

are not

athletes

they're writers

readers

feminists

people who make

change

i don't want to

be a singer

or a soccer star

i want to be a

girl

who goes to

bed at night

thinking of

how romeo

looked at

juliet

as though she

was made of

magic

i want to

fall asleep

dreaming of

hogwarts

and evil fairies

and neverland

dear readers

i do not

care

for this

mundane reality

i want to

be swept away

into a

story

where a

prince kisses me

awake

well-mannered

but he's roguish

too

i want to

dream

when i'm older

not sit in an

office

surrounded by

the same people

our imaginations

gathering

dust

as if they were

textbooks

on a shelf

i want to live in

libraries

in stories

in places

that you couldn't

dream up

yourself

dear readers

i want to

live a life

in which

fairytales

come

true
