After putting down the bottles he carefully opened the jade box his uncle gave him. Inside was a bundle of blue green grass that seems to emanate life. He admired it for a few seconds before separating some of the grass and carefully closing the box again.

He then brought out a small mortar and pestle he borrowed from the kitchen and ground some of the spirit grass to a violet sludge.

After that he began to draw four small circles on the ground with a stick creating small ridges where he carefully put the violet sludge. He then connected these circles with one big circular line. Then he drew runes following the big circular line.
These were all according to the information in his mind, so that he wouldn't waste the materials he made sure to draw the diagram as precise as possible.

After he finished drawing he placed the four jars on the four circles following the four cardinal directions. After he placed the last jar the whole diagram began to dimly glow.

He was ecstatic. It works! I'm actually not crazy after all he giggled.

It had been what bothered him the most the past few years, what if these information were actually useless. Especially when after reading all the scrolls he could find, no records seem to be confirming his knowledge, only slight similarities. Now that he tested it, he was finally sure.

He then stood in the center of the diagram and pricked his finger letting a drop of blood into the glowing diagram. According to the information in his mind if he had an affinity to any of the creational elements he would see a reaction from the four objects surrounding him. If the reaction was a slight disturbance of elemental particles then his affinity would be none to below average. If his body was able to slightly attract the elemental particles then he would have an average to above average affinity. If his body would experience a surge of elemental particles attracted from any of the objects then his affinity would be excellent. Afterwhich these elemental particles would be absorbed by his body making him more sensitive to elemental energies.

After his blood joined the diagram a disturbance can be observed from the four jars which made them crack. Glowing particles then started to rise from the spirit water and sparkle sand which flew around his body signifying an average affinity. He then looked at the jar of wind and burning coal expectantly.

The burning coal burst into glowing red particles which all surged into him like water thrown into parched land. As for the mischievous wind, it glowed a few seconds then dissipated without any other reaction at all. Seeing this little Xi pondered deeply. Oh well, he thought at least I have affinity to three of them.

After checking that everything he did was correct as the diagram did work he scratched his head and threw it at the back of his mind. He had an excellent affinity to fire and average affinity to earth and water so he can be considered as talented. He then cleaned the area to make sure no one would figure out what he did.

Aside from the elemental disturbance which he cannot do anything about and will eventually dissipate in time, the clearing looked normal. He then went back to the manor so as not to miss the arrival of the special guests.

What he didn't notice is that a few minutes after he left a figure suddenly appeared in the clearing. It was a man wearing a blue robe holding a folding fan. The man observed the clearing and noticed nothing unusual. He then waved the fan and glowing motes of elemental particles appeared which were slowly dissipating.

A gleam was seen in his eyes as he observed these elemental particles. Spirit water, sparkle sand, burning coal and...mischievous wind. Interesting he murmured. He took one step and disappeared again.

Little Xi was now near the manor, he was carrying a bundle of firewood he gathered as he walked back to give to the kitchens along with the jade box containing the remaining spirit grass.

Now that he finished his aptitude test he began planning on his next step. While picking up sticks he thought about the most pressing matter he needed. An artifact. In his mind he saw a stick like item called a wand used to cast magic. It helps a magus to gather and guide the elemental energy.

A wand is an artifact made of some type of spirit wood with a core from a natural magical item like a spirit beast horn or heart. It facilitates the gathering and casting of energy allowing magi to control them better. Those who can perform wandless magic are those who have mastered total control of magic like the gods, or those ancient magi who have lived for a very long time.

Procuring a spirit wood would be a bit hard but not impossible. Although they are quite rare, from time to time the clan is able to acquire some and sell them to the sects. As for the core it would be quite a problem. Magical beasts are quite powerful and not just anyone can defeat them. Hence for a mortal to acquire even a single hair would be next to impossible. Although records are present regarding the different magical beasts of the east which little Xi have never even heard of before, they are located in dangerous zones. He was thinking about this dilemma when he reached the back gate of the manor.

He was about to enter the back gate when he noticed a man in blue robe coming near.

He looked elegant with his folding fan and long hair fixed in a bun on the top of his head. He exuded an aura of confidence like everyone is beneath him, not haugty but firm. What surprised little Xi was actually the fan the man was holding. As someone who has become more sensitive to elemental energies he could feel that the fan is an artifact. However he did not show his astonishment but only looked at the man like a kid full of curiosity.

The man looked at him trying to sense anything unusual but gave up after seeing that the kid in front of him was ordinary.

Child are you of the Moshu clan? He asked folding his fan.

I do live in the Moshu clan manor little Xi answered.

Noticing his peculiar answer the man raised an eyebrow. No matter he said, I am a guest from the Divine Lotus sect and I seemed to have lost my way can you bring me inside so as to join my companions.

He is a guest from the sect, little Xi thought with wide eyes as his suspicion was confirmed.

He immediately dropped the firewood he was holding before bowing.

Little xi greets senior. Although I live here, I am sorry but I am not of the Moshu clan hence unworthy to become seniors guide. I will inform someone so that they can send people to properly guide you. He answered curtly.

What he said was indeed true. He and his mother are now technically not a member of the clan and not even servants, but they are more like guests who stay with his uncle.

His answer made the man startled. For a ten year old, this kid sure knows a lot. He thought.

Well then he answered waving the kid away as he waited for a proper escort.

Little Xi hurried to the kitchen and informed the servants about the man. The servants then hurried to the main hall to inform the clan members. After a few minutes little Xi heard some of the clan members who seemed to be clambering to get to the back gate to receive the guest. Little Xi watched them from a corner making sure no one spotted him as he wanted to observe further the man from the sect with a magical fan.

If all members of the sect are able to get a magical item, then if he joined wouldn't his wand problem be easily solved he thought.

He had different hiding spots in the clan manor as he had been exploring it since he started walking. Thus he easily followed the crowd into the hall without anyone noticing.
