{CHAPTER 2.}

Lydia:

What Alec asked me yesterday had me up nearly the whole night. Thinking of getting the wrong reputation around here already was starting to frighten me. What if the people didn't like us or weren't as welcoming as we'd hoped. Guess we have to find out for ourselves now.

As I fluttered open my eyes the sun shone bright through the curtain-less window. It was somewhat soothing-somewhat way too early for this. Getting up from the mattress I had slept on was the hardest thing right now: it was quite comfortable. I could hear dishes and cupboards opening and closing so I figured my parents were downstairs putting them away. The dark wooden floor was cold but even colder as I stepped on the marble floors in the bathroom. I wasn't so much of a mess but, the creases in my pillows were imprinted on the side of my face again. Little things never change.

When I came out of the bathroom, Alec was just exiting his room. I paused for a second and he gave me a closed mouth smile as he rubbed one of his eyes. Then I continued down the spiral stairs. In the kitchen Cassidy sat by the counter on a stool eating pancakes.

" Good morning Sunshine!" My Dad poured batter into a pan over the stove and my Mom looked up from decorating berries over a stack.

" Hey sweetie." She said quietly.

" Hey." Cassidy smiled.

" Morning." I sighed.

I sat on a stool next to Cassidy as my Mom handed me a plate with two pancakes and some syrup on them.

" Berries are here if you want." She offered and went into the fridge to retrieve them.

" When did you even get this stuff?" I asked.

" This morning." She replied. "Your father and I've been up since six."

" What time is it now?" I asked again.

" Ten twenty-seven." Cassidy answered.

" Is there any whipped cream?" I raised my eyebrows in curiosity.

" Oh no honey ... I'll go get some for you." My Mom grabbed the car keys and left before I could argue with her about being too much of a good Mom.

Just then, Alec came down the stairs in excitement.

" Good morning loving family of mine!" He exclaimed giving Cassidy and I a hug.

" Oh hey Alec!" Dad smiled at him before peeling off the last pancake and plopping it down on the stack.

After breakfast my Dad called over a handful of his friends from work to help move stuff around in the house. My Mom came back from the store with much more than just whipped cream as well. If you ask me, things are moving along pretty well. A few hours went by and nearly everything was set up: furniture wise.

Alec, Cassidy and I were on the wooden porch in front of the house talking about the new neighbourhood.

" I just hope our neighbours are nice." Cassidy sighed. "Remember our old neighbours?" She asked.

Things were quiet on the street but, if you listened closely you could hear a car coming down the road.

" You mean the stoners?" Alec chuckled.

" Don't call them that." Cassidy punched his arm playfully. "They were just ... Hippies okay." Her laugh was too loud for me to hear the car coming down the road.

" I don't think I'll get used to this place." Alec shook his head. "What about you Lydia?"

The car finally drove by our house, a lot slower than before it was blue and vintage-looking. I wasn't sure how or why the car got my attention but, it did.
