Japan Interview 1990

Interviewer- So um for millions of fans who are watching this show, Tommy can you clearly explain why you couldn't bring your drum kit this time?

Tommy- Because of um the Japanese hall managers at the Budokan and some of the other gigs weren't convinced that it was safe. And once we convinced them that it was safe, and we'd done it at a hundred and something shows all through the rest of the world. It's a bummer because it's a fun... fun thing and it's very safe and it's too bad that somebody you know... doesn't wanna let it happen. I gotta lotta letters from kids saying... how come you don't fly in Japan, and it's sad... they said we're sad because some of them seen pictures from America. And that's sad too because they're wondering why it's not here and it's not our fault it's somebody else's. It's out of our control. It's like your hands are tied behind your back when somebody tells you... oh you can't do this... oh it's no good... oh it's not safe. It's totally safe.

Interviewer- Right I see. When or how did you first discover or encounter music?

Tommy- Oh my self?

Interviewer- Yes.

Tommy- I guess... I don't know if you'd call it discover music but uh... you know when I was a little kid. I used to reach into the silver wear drawer when I was tall enough and get forks and knives, and I use to beat on everything and drive my parents crazy. So, I guess that would be the discovery part. I don't know if it was music it was pretty much-

Nikki- Noise Ha- ha

Tommy- Ha- Ha I drove my parent's bananas ha-ha. But as far as the music I think I really knew what I wanted to do when I was in fifth grade... I don't really remember how old I was.

Interviewer- 10, 11, 12?

Tommy- Yeah something like that. I started playing drums in the school band and then I uh... took it from there.

Interviewer- And what about your case?

Nikki- Uh, I think I remember hearing country and western on my grandparents' radio and always liking sort of the most aggressive or the most get down country music and that for me just led from one style of music to the other until I finally ended up with this type of music. But I remember that was one of the first times, but I also remember in school they had music class and I didn't take it but I would skip my other classes and go sit outside and listen to it. I was so into the music and u was always hanging out with the other musicians and stuff.

Interviewer- Alright, that's nice. So, what was the first record that you bought?

Tommy- Ha-ha the first record we...
