Otto finally managed a small smile of his own. It was sweet of Olive to let him try and jog her memory because she didn't wanna see him sad. Otto thought it was even more of a sweet gesture since, in Olive's mind, she didn't even know him, so it was like she was just deciding to trust him.
"Ok. Follow me." Otto replied, already headed for the hall of doors with Olive in tow.
They stopped in front of what was no doubt, one of Otto's favorite rooms in hq. The donut room.
"Where's this?" Olive asked, staring at the festively (and deliciously) decorated door in front of them.
"Donut room. We go here all the time to eat snacks, or just goof off. It's one of my favorite rooms." Otto explained to her, trying his best to engrain the details in her mind. She just had to remember. She had to. He didn't know what he'd do if she didn't.
"Come on." Otto said, ushering her inside.
Once inside, they sat down on the floor, leaning against the wall like they usually did, Otto offering her a donut as he was already munching on his own.
"That tastes really good! Like, really good. Wow!" Olive commented after biting into the treat.
"Well duh! Donuts are like, the best food ever!" Otto reacted, causing Olive to giggle, her dimples showing.
Otto could've sworn that time halted for a moment to listen to her laughter, which was music to his ears, the sight of her happiness effortlessly warming his heart.
Suddenly though, reality came back to him and he sat his snack down, sighing heavily.
Olive looked over at him in concern, setting her food down also.
"What's wrong?" she innocently asked.
"I- I should've told you...." Otto trailed off quietly.
"Told me what?" Olive was now even more interested in what he was saying. Otto looked directly into her eyes.
"I should've told you that I love you."
Olive nearly gasped at the seriousness in his voice.
"I was just scared that you wouldn't feel the same way, but now that you- you don't remember anything, I don't even know if you feel the same way." he sighed. "You really don't remember any of this?" he gestured between the two of them and she shook her head.
"To be honest, no. But I do have to admit. Something about you, seems familiar. Like I don't know you but at the same time, I've known you for a long time...." Olive trailed off.
They just sat there in silence for a while, staring into each other's eyes, until Olive finally averted her gaze and broke the silence.
"Well, Otto, I'm sure I probably love you back. I mean, you're pretty cute." she joked, lightening the mood a little.
Otto cracked a smile, but not without blushing first. "Thanks, Olive." he then absentmindedly took her hand in his.
Now that. That was a familiar feeling for Olive. So familiar that it bothered her that she couldn't fully remember it.
She looked over at Otto's half eaten donut on a small plate on the floor.
"You're not gonna finish your donut?" she asked.
Otto shrugged. "Nah, not really hungry."
"But you're always hungry. You love food." Olive stated matter-of -factly.
Wait-
"Yeah I- wait, how do you know that?" Otto asked, hope instantly seeping into his voice.
Olive's eyes widened and that's when everything clicked. All the memories flooded back into her brain all at once, and it was relieving.
She remembered.
"Partner?" Olive said in the form of a question.
"Olive?"
"Otto!" Olive exclaimed happily as they both stood to hug each other, Otto picking her up and spinning her around.
"So you remember me?" Otto asked hopefully.
Olive smiled so brightly that it could light up a city. "Yes. I remember everything!" she stated.
"Yes!! I was so worried! I'm so sorry, Olive. This whole thing was my fault anyway." Otto apologized suddenly feeling guilty.
"It's ok, partner. Everything's ok now." Olive said.
Otto then looked up at her again, an unreadable expression on his face. "So, do you remember what I said earlier? You know, about us?"
Olive smiled again. "Yes, I do. And I was right. I do love you too."
And with that Otto began celebrating inside his head, but on the outside he tried to keep it cool.
"Soooo, are we like a thing now?" he nervously asked her, his cheeks beet red.
Olive giggled. "Yeah, Otto. We're a thing." she told him, causing both of them to blush even more.
They then walked back to the lab, hand in hand to tell Oscar that everything worked out.
"It's good to have you back, partner." Otto genuinely told Olive as they walked.
"It's good to be back." She replied, mirroring his warm, familiar smile.
