Oona had been busy working in her lab all day. She was working on a new gadget, the 'glue-inator'. She decided that it'd come in handy since she was always dropping things.
She was so deep into her work, that she didn't notice that the day shift was almost over.
Olympia and Otis were just finishing up their paperwork and getting ready to head home.
"See you tomorrow, Otis." Olympia said, walking towards the tube lobby and waving to him.
"See you tomorrow, Olympia." Otis replied as he nodded once.
But just as Otis was about to walk to the tube lobby and go home, he heard a clattering noise coming from the lab, and looked over only to find Oona still working on something.
Otis was surprised Oona hadn't gone home yet. He walked over to the lab to see what she was up to.
"Oona?" he cautiously asked once he reached the lab counter.
Oona looked up from what she was doing "Huh? Oh, howdy do, Otis! What can I do for you?" she asked in a cheery, yet distracted voice.
"Um I was just about to go home actually. You know the day shift is over, right?" he slowly asked.
Oona stared at him blankly, but then her eyes widened "What?! I- I thought it was like the middle of the day!" she exclaimed in surprise, glancing at her watch "I was working that long?!" she said in disbelief.
Otis nodded.
"Well, it was totally worth it anyway, because I did it!" Oona stated triumphantly.
"Did what?" Otis inquired.
"This!" Oona replied, holding up her newly made gadget.
"What's that?"
"I present to you, the glue-inator!" Oona dramatically announced, smiling widely. "I figured it'd come in handy since I'm always dropping things…." she trailed off.
"Oh." Otis said, not really knowing what else to say to that.
"Allow me to show you how it works." Oona said excitedly.
Otis was very tempted to insist that they just head home now and talk about the gadget another day, but he couldn't quite bring himself to do that when he saw how excited Oona was about her new creation, so Otis stayed quiet.
"Watch this!" Oona said, taking a nearby lamp (which was sitting on the lab counter for who-knows-what reason) and carelessly dropping it on the floor, causing it to shatter. She then pointed the gadget at the lamp, and in a flash of light, it was instantly glued back together.
"Bam! Glued back together!" Oona celebrated, smiling at Otis.
Otis couldn't help but smile back and chuckle a bit at Oona's excited expression.
"That's pretty cool, Oona." Otis commented genuinely.
Oona smiled "Thanks."
They just stood there for a second, Oona staring down at the lamp on the floor.
"Uh, we should probably head home now…." Otis reluctantly suggested, breaking the awkward silence.
Oona looked up at him "Oh, right, yeah let's go." she said awkwardly. She went to pick up the lamp off of the floor, however, Otis went to pick it up at the exact same time.
It all happened so fast, Oona dropped the glue-inator by mistake, sending it clattering to the ground, and in a flash of light, Oona and Otis were kneeling on the ground, holding hands.
"What just happened?" Otis asked, blushing slightly.
"I- I don't know…. I think I dropped the glue-inator." Oona replied nervously.
"I meant, why are we uh…." Otis trailed off, looking down at their joined hands.
"Oh uh…. uh oh…." Oona trailed off as she tried to let go of Otis' hand, but failed to do so.
"Oona?" Otis cautiously asked.
"Our hands are stuck together! It must've happened when I dropped the glue-inator! I glued our hands together!" Oona exclaimed, staring to panic a bit.
"Hey, hey, Oona! It's ok calm down." Otis said, trying to calm Oona down.
He stood up, pulling Oona up with him. "Can't we just use glue remover?" Otis asked calmly.
"Umm…. actually, I kinda designed the glue-inator so that regular glue remover won't work on it. You have to use the glue-remover-inator." Oona nervously explained, tugging on her lab coat with her free hand.
"Ok. Where's the glue remover-inator?" Otis questioned.
"I actually haven't built it yet…." Oona admitted, bracing for Otis' reply.
"What?!" Otis almost shouted in disbelief.
Just then, they noticed that the lights were staring to dim, and all the day shift agents had already left. Night shift would be taking over soon.
Otis and Oona both knew that they couldn't ride the tubes with their hands stuck together. And the gadget that they needed to free them, wasn't even invented yet!
"What are we gonna do?" Otis asked, looking over at Oona as night shift agents were already beginning to arrive.
What were they gonna do?
