Otis and Olympia were sitting at their desks doing paperwork, even though Otis could barely focus on his, becoming quite distracted by his racing thoughts. He had been crushing on Olympia since the first day he met her, brushing it off at first since he thought the feelings would eventually dissolve. Clearly he was wrong about that. It was only once they started to become best friends that he realized his 'crush' wasn't going away anytime soon, and by then he was sure it was more than a crush. He was in love with her.
He was currently trying to decide if he should ever admit that to her or not, debating about it in his mind for what felt like hours as Olympia sat calmly next to him, doing her work.
"Otis?" Olympia asked out of nowhere, turning her head to face him, seeing that he was already staring in her direction, his cheeks turning a little red.
"Yeah?" he responded.
"Do you ever think about dating?" Olympia questioned.
Otis' heart rate sped up as his face became the shade of a tomato. He wasn't sure how to react as he wondered what she meant by that question. Did she mean dating her? Or dating in general?
"Um, what do you mean?" he decided on saying, trying to sound casual.
Olympia shrugged. "Well, I don't know. I just mean do you ever think about what it'd be like to date someone?" she explained.
"Do you?" Otis asked back, choosing his words carefully.
Olympia was quiet for a second, which made Otis even more curious as to what was going through her mind.
"I don't know. I mean, I guess. Sometimes." she vaguely responded. "Do you have a crush on anyone?" she added, now avoiding eye contact.
Otis froze. He hadn't expected such a direct question, mentally debating whether he should tell her the truth or not.
"I don't know. Do you?" he countered, wantings to slap himself for how repetitive his replies were getting.
"Um, not really. I was just curious." Olympia said, quickly going back to her paperwork as the two of them just ditched the awkward topic of conversation. But little did Otis know, Olympia was completely lying about not having a crush. In reality, she did have a crush.... a crush on Otis. But she had refrained from telling him, since she was convinced that he didn't feel the same way.
She let out an extra quiet sigh as she stared at the paper on her desk. If Otis didn't have those kind of feelings for her, maybe she should just try to get over him....
Later that day, Oona and Oscar were in the lab working on some gadget repairs. Oona was trying not to stare in Oscar's direction, but it was hard when he looked that cute. It had been months since Oona realized that she had feelings for Oscar, and she still hadn't admitted it to him, not that she planned to at all. It was too big of a risk to tell him something like that, especially with him being her boss and one of her best friends. She didn't want to ruin their bond.
"Oona? Are you ok?" Oscar gently asked her, snapping her out of her thoughts.
"Huh? Oh, um, yeah. I'm fine, why?" she stammered her reply.
"You were looking over at me like you were lost in thought about something."
Oona's cheeks turned red. He had noticed her staring. "Oh, yeah I was just.... thinking about these gadget repairs. I was just hoping that I do them all correctly." she fabricated, hoping that he would believe her excuse even though it didn't sound that convincing.
"Don't worry, Oona, I know you're gonna do them all perfectly. You can do gadget repairs in your sleep. You're really amazing at it. I mean, you're amazing in general...." Oscar trailed off, seeming to trip over his words as he and Oona stared at each other for a little too long, their faces turning crimson. It was moments like these that made Oona think there might actually be something between her and Oscar, but she tried to push those thoughts aside. She couldn't do anything about it anyway.
At lunchtime, Oona was sitting in the break room as she stared at her jelly sandwich in front of her. She was waiting for Oscar to join her before she would eat it. But just then, to her surprise, Otis walked up to her.
"Hey, Oona. Where's Oscar? I thought he was having lunch with you today." Otis said once he noticed that Oscar wasn't there.
"He is. But he's just running a little late. He should be here in a second." Oona clarified, Otis nodding in understanding.
"I'm waiting for Olympia too." he said. Oona decided that it'd be cool if the four of them ate lunch together, so she urged Otis to take a seat, which he did. And right then, as if on cue, Oscar walked in with Olympia, the two of them holding hands.
Oona and Otis' eyes widened in disbelief as they looked up at their friends. Why were they holding hands?
"Oh, hey guys. Otis, I didn't know you'd be here." Oscar greeted.
"Yeah, I was waiting for Olympia...." Otis trailed off, still completely confused as to what was going on.
"I thought we could all eat lunch together." Oona chimed in, trying to act natural. But she was freaking out inside as Olympia and Oscar sat down at the table, still holding hands as they smiled at each other.
"Alright, what's going on here?" Otis slowly asked, breaking the awkward silence that had settled between the four of them.
"What do you mean?" Olympia asked.
"Um.... I mean with you two?" Otis reluctantly clarified, gesturing to Olympia and Oscar's joined hands.
"Oh, right. Um, Oscar and I are dating." Olympia stated, everything instantly becoming awkward as everyone got quiet.
"What?" Otis finally said.
"Since when?" Oona cut in.
"Since earlier today actually." Oscar awkwardly explained, avoiding eye contact with Oona.
"Yeah, and Oscar's taking me to this awesome Soundcheck concert tonight. It's gonna be really fun. You guys can come too if you want." Olympia offered, but Oona instantly shook her head.
"No thanks. I.... I'm busy tonight. And actually I just remembered, I have something I need to do right now. I'll see you guys later." she lied, standing from her seat and quickly leaving the room, not wanting to watch her crush with someone else.
"I have to go too, I'll see you later, Olympia. Later, Oscar." Otis fabricated, not even giving them a chance to reply before he left the room as well.
Olympia sighed quietly before looking over at Oscar, forcing a smile. She hoped she hadn't made Otis upset, but why would he be upset? She was convinced that he didn't like her in that way.... right?
