Why aren't we dating yet? (Otis x Olympia)

It was obvious to everyone that Otis and Olympia were best friends. They did nearly everything together, and they even had their own secret handshake and inside jokes that made zero sense to anyone but themselves.

But there was something else that nearly everyone around them noticed, and Otis and Olympia were also fully aware of it.

The blushing, the way that they looked at each other, the ever-so-subtle flirting....

Yup, it was totally obvious, Otis and Olympia were crushing on each other.

But that's not what they said when they were asked about it.

"Olympia and I are just best friends. That's it." Otis claimed after Oona mentioned how Otis and Olympia would make 'such a cute couple'.

"Sureeee...." Oona sarcastically replied, leaning her forearms on the lab counter. Oona could clearly tell that something was going on between her two best friends, even though they kept denying it. and Oona was their number one 'shipper'

"So, Olympia wanted to know if you finished upgrading that toast-inator gadget." Otis said, expertly changing the subject.

"Oh Yeah, it's all finished, and better than ever!" Oona replied confidently, before whipping out the new and improved toast-inator and handing it to Otis.

"Thanks." Otis reacted simply.

"No problem. You can give it to Olympia later after your 'lunch date' in the break room." Oona lightly teased him.

"It's not a date." Otis stated, secretly wishing the opposite, and blushing faintly as he walked off towards the break room to meet Olympia.

"Have fun!" Oona called cheerfully.

"Hey, Olympia." Otis greeted his partner when he entered the break room. There was a Schmumber's to-go bag sitting on the table, so Otis figured that Olympia had ordered burgers for lunch.

Olympia instantly smiled when she saw him. "Hey, Otis." she said, standing up to hug him as if she hadn't seen him all day.

Otis blushed a bit as he hugged her back.

They then both sat down at the table, Olympia already taking her burger out of the bag before handing Otis his plain bread which she had ordered for him.

"Thanks, partner." Otis thanked her with a small smile.

"It's just bread, man. Let it go." Olympia reacted playfully, causing Otis to chuckle a bit. That had been their inside joke ever since rookie night, since that was what Olympia had said to Otis when he didn't even get to take a bite of his bread because they were in such a hurry that day. That was also the day that Olympia realized that she had feelings for him.

And after that, was when the subtle flirting on Otis' part began. So Olympia was pretty sure that he liked her back, yet they were both too scared to do anything about it, afraid they might ruin their friendship.

After they were done with lunch, Otis and Olympia just sat there for a while, chatting away about nonsense as they enjoyed each other's company.

"So, what did Oona say about that toast-inator gadget?" Olympia questioned.

"Oh she said that it was all done being upgraded." Otis replied "She told me to give it back to you after our lunch date." he accidentally said, his cheeks heating up as soon as the words came out of his mouth.

"Date?" Olympia echoed back, blushing furiously.

"Um I- I didn't mean it like that, I mean, that's what Oona said, but-" Otis stumbled over his words as he tried to clean up his previous statement.

"It's ok, Otis. Oona says that kinda stuff to me all the time too." Olympia cut in.

Otis let out a nervous laugh before adding "I guess she really wants us to date, huh?"

"Heh yeah. Yesterday she said that we'd make a really 'cute couple'." Olympia replied. By this point, she and Otis were already walking back to their desks.

"She said that to me today too." Otis said, wondering why he hadn't tried to change the subject yet.

"I mean, she's not wrong. You're really cute, so that would automatically make us a cute couple." Olympia commented. Why were they still not changing the subject?

Otis' cheeks turned a pink shade "You're the cute one." he reacted.

Olympia blushed. It wasn't the first time Otis called her cute though, since he'd been doing that a lot lately.

"Olympia?" Otis quietly said, stopping walking when they were finally in front of their desks.

"Yeah?" Olympia replied.

Otis bit his lip nervously before speaking "I'm pretty sure you already know I really like you. And I feel like you like me too." he told her, even though it was painfully obvious already.

"I do really like you. So, why aren't we, you know, dating yet?" Olympia questioned shyly.

"I don't know. I'm scared I guess." Otis admitted, nearly shaking as he grew even more nervous.

"So am I." Olympia said.

"But, I really do like you, Olympia. So I'm done being scared." Otis told her before gently taking her hand.

"Let's just take things slow. Will you go on an actual date with me?" Otis asked her with a slight smile.

Olympia smiled wider than ever "Of course I will, Otis." she replied before kissing him on the cheek, causing him to blush like mad.

In that moment, Otis and Olympia both knew that this was the start of something that would not only be really special, but would also strengthen their already beautiful friendship.
