The club was nothing like Hye-won had imagined from In-seo's tales of his youth. Though first impressions were less than elegant as the venue was accessed down a set of steep steps - which Hye-won - in heels - navigated carefully with Seon-jae's arm steadying her all the way - once downstairs, the interior was revealed to be a very retro take on the cool 60s - angular, modular tables and sleek, banquette-style lounging areas. Blocked colours gleamed in the cool light cast by the many down-lighters.
Ciara gave a little whoop: 'wow, you guys, from your stories, I thought it was going to be all wood-shavings-on-the-floor and an outhouse for a bathroom. This is...,' she spun around on one foot, 'awesome.'
In-seo also looked quite astounded at the transformation but Dieter chuckled at Ciara's surprise: 'my dear, what a bunch of poor grad students would put up with 20 years ago and what young people these days will accept are 2 very different things.'
He paused then, as a tall man with a floppy, blonde fringe approached to shake his hand warmly, before both turned to the group: 'everyone, this is Philip - as decent an Englishman as ever you will meet.'
Philip laughed and introductions were quickly taken care of. In-seo immediately wanted to know how an Englishman had ended up taking over a club in northern Germany and how the club had been transformed to look so totally different to his memories and while the 3 men began to chat, Ciara turned to the couple: 'anyone feel like a drink? I know I do - something fabulous, I think.'
Seon-jae grinned and offered to go to the bar - so long as she was a bit more specific about what exactly would be fabulous enough for her - but first, he held out an elbow towards Hye-won: 'my lady, we have to rest those lovely feet,' and his arch look put her right back in that moment in the taxi and his next look told her that knowing that made him gleeful.

The trendy clientele were a far cry from the scruffy, under-nourished and permanently spaced-out regulars Dieter and In-seo remembered and Philip - also a former regular in his day - agreed. The customers ranged in easy attitude across minimal furniture or idled in small groups, sipping drinks and looking generally like there wasn't a wrinkle in their smooth, shiny lives.
Ciara cast her eye around the room with the practised skill of an experienced clubber and her eye landed on a group of women, in particular, one young woman with long blonde hair and the figure of a model, whose laugh showed straight, white teeth and hinted at an open temperament. Uncannily, within seconds of Ciara's eyeing her up, the girl turned her head and made direct eye contact with Ciara and an unspoken message seemed to pass between them. Hye-won had watched this routine in silent amazement and when Ciara turned to her, she didn't even let her speak: 'I know, I know...she's hot. I'll send Seon-jae over with your drink - don't go anywhere just yet,' and the 2 women giggled, as Ciara moved, with a salacious wink. Within seconds of joining the group, Hye-won could see the women all laughing at something that Ciara had said, after which Hye-won turned her gaze away and left Ciara to tread her own merry path.
