JIMIN
Flashback

"Be careful, my darling! Don't get too close to the edge!" My mother called over to JiHyun, breaking her attention away from the other parents for a second. "Stay with your friends!"

Every week or so, all the kids from my class would meet at the quarry just outside of our town. It was a way for all the parents to socialise with each other, and for us kids to have a break from our studies. I, however, used it as an opportunity to learn about dance.

I sighed as my little brother ran circuits around the quarry, calling out for me to chase him. He hadn't left me alone all day and this was the one chance I'd had in weeks to study what I truly wanted to study.

"Jiminie, come catch me!" He screamed, giggling as his little legs overworked beneath him.

"Maybe later JiHyun!" I shouted back, sitting down to read my book.

I loved my little brother; I would have done anything for him, but I somewhat envied him as well. I was jealous of how kind and smart he was, and how extroverted he was in social situations like these. He was so loved in school that I was known as JiHyun's brother instead of by my own name. It was hard being the failure of the family and having an angel of a younger brother always proving how incompetent I was.

I ignored his squeals and read the first page of my book. I was going to be a famous dancer one day and perform at Seoul's Sejong Theatre. I couldn't be distracted by my kid brother.

I was sitting out the way of the other kids playing tag, avoiding my mother's glare that meant 'go and socialise', but it wasn't my kind of game. I craved something more intricate; something that would get my brain working. I wanted to create art with my body.

"Look, everyone! Loner Jimin's reading his girl book again!" Bon-Hwa, one of the bullies from my class shouted, running over to me. "What are you reading this time, pig?" He asked, kicking the book out of my hands so it landed on the dusty earth.

I looked over to my mother for help, but she was laughing with the other parents, probably discussing how her business was thriving.

"Leave me alone," I snapped, picking my book off the ground and dusting it off.

"What are you going to do if I don't?" He smirked, kicking the dirt in my face and all over my new top. "Are you going to dance?" He teased, making the rest of his group burst into laughter as he pretended to act scared.

At that point, I knew it was best to remove myself from the situation before things got out of hand. He was trying to provoke me, as always, and I'd just end up getting into trouble again.

As I got up, he looked over at the other boys, signalling something to them. I knew what was coming and I knew I wouldn't be able to escape it, there was too many of them. Before I could even run, they had dragged me back. Two of them holding my arms down as they took it in turns to punch me over and over again.
