He was two hours early with no college to attend. He practically walked to and fro, around the city just to avoid his urge to smoke. She had very subtly requested him not to smoke and meet her for celebrating her birthday. He had no idea It would be this difficult but he just tried not to smoke.
Shane barely ate most of his time. He had to make a trade-off between food and cigarettes, he chose what turned out to be his true favorite. But, he is a foodie at heart. He was always the one to find out the best places to go out and eat. He once watched Mads Mikkelsen cook as he portrayed the character of Dr. Hannibal Lector and he was so impressed that he once wanted to become a chef. It was a fine Chinese restaurant that was close to their college which he thought would work well.
Jenny, Dash, Sabrina, Caroline, Joyce, and Stara all came together at the venue, and for a moment Shane thought the party was already done somewhere else where he wasn't invited at all. You usually know when someone is staring at you because they are just staring without hesitation, shameless. But, you know how you act when you want to be noticed too.
They both saw each other and probably had an entire much-needed conversation just by looking at each other, blinking and smiling.
'How do I look?'
'You look beautiful.'
'Thank you'
Words are for the unfortunate who don't know the language of the eyes.
As it was more of a belated celebration she didn't dress heavily but that doesn't mean she didn't take time preparing her outfit. Her turquoise green top had two leaf cuts on the neckline, it had rose prints and two overlapping circles. She had small diamond earrings and her hair tied to the side. She had replaced patron now with his necklace. She had a habit of holding on to her pendant without thinking when she talked and when she spoke to Shane for a brief moment, she smartly but intentionally held on to it and spoke. Shane forgot everything he wanted to say and she blushed.
Jenny wasn't the only one who took efforts to dress up. Shane did what he wouldn't think of doing for any other girl. He got his hair cut, barely grown stubble shaved just to look good for any photo that would be clicked. He wore a grey t-shirt and a blue jacket.
They sat and like the sweetest juniors, everyone kept the chair beside Jenny empty for Shane. He took few steps and tried inching the chair closer to hers, too which she whispered to him 'You want to come and sit closer? Why don't you come and sit on my lap only?' he was embarrassed and he shifted away immediately. Jenny giggled and shifted her chair closer to his. She was on fire.
They both stared at each other. Not purposely, sort of.
How does a guy stare at his girl? Secretly? Correct.
How did Shane stare at her? He turned his entire body almost to her side and held his hands on the table folded with one hand holding his chin as if he was trying to not admire her but decipher, in either case, both would be equally true. Jenny caught her and she gave stares trying to control her blushing and smiling. They just looked in the eyes of each other searching for something.
Fortunately, for Shane, they were snapped. It was Stara, again. The best part about that moment was that Jenny didn't break that moment as they both knew that she was taking the photo was because they both had in turns saw her from the corner of their eyes.
"You guys look like the late Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles of their iconic shot from '10 Things I hate about you'.", Stara said as she looked at the photo she just clicked?
"What?" Shane asked and all the girls on the table judged him, even Jenny.
"You haven't watched that movie?" Joyce asked.
