James Potter was unable to contain his excitement as he walked into the Gryffindor common room.
It was simply impossible to stop smiling.
"Well, did you do it then?" Sirius asked from his spot on the armchair, Remus sitting against his legs on the floor, with a book in hand.
"Do what?" Lily asked as she looked up from the game of chess she was playing, and beating, Peter in.
"I got engaged." James smiled a smile that stretched all the way to his cheeks.
"Yes you did." Sirius jumped up to congratulate his friend and clapped him in the back.
"Who would've though, not even a year ago you were trailing Evans and now you're engaged to a woman who makes me question my sexuality."
"Gee, thanks." Remus said from his spot.
"Don't worry babe, I'm sure you give way better head." Sirius winked.
Remus's cheeks blushed bright read and he opened and closed his mouth, looking for something to say but ultimately too shocked and taken aback.
"Not sure about that, mate." James smirked at his best friend.
"James got laid too" Peter gasped, nearly knocking over the chess board.
Lily sat quietly in her seat, feeling her heart sink into her stomach. This wasn't how it was supposed to be.
She loved James and she was so sure he loved her too. Why was that not enough.
Why did someone else have to come along and beat her to realize that she was in love with James.
So in love that his messy hair was cute instead of unruly. That his pranks were funny instead of childish. That his glasses just added to his schoolboy charm.
Did she love him as much as Lily loved him. Did she love him so much it hurt? Would she be able to love him for the cracks in his smile and the heartache in his soul? Could she do that? Could anyone but Lily love him right?
With abruptness Lily got up from her seat and walked through the portrait hole. Not even daring to look back.
Marlene sent a worried glance after her friend and a questioning one at Alice.
Alice simply shook her head, it was best to give her time alone to process it.
"What was that about?" Peter asked, sending confused glances to the group of teenagers around him.
James's look of excitement and pride quickly fell as he realized how inconsiderate it had been, he thought Lily was over him and they were friends. But he should've known better than to think that love just disappears.
"I'll go check on her." He said to the group, not waiting for a response before striding out of the common room.

James found Lily sitting with her legs swung over the Astronomy Tower ledge, staring at the soft orange of the sunset.
"I don't want to talk to you right now James." She said, wiping her eyes with her sleeve.
"I thought we were friends." He smiled softly, sitting down next to her.
"We can never be friends." She said sadly, looking away from hid face and looking at the horizon once again.
"I don't understand Lily, for seven years you practically hate me and when I finally move on you want me." Confusion and sadness coated his features.
"I am under no obligation to make sense to you." Lily hissed, looking back at the boy sitting next to her.
All she wanted to do was stare at the sunset and feel sorry for herself.
Like the sky said goodbye to the sun, she was going to say goodbye to James. He was going to start a new life and she was going to let him. But here he was, he came after her and surely that meant that she still had a chance. Was James Potter going to be her sunrise, or sunset?
"I'm sure she's really great, but you were supposed to choose me!" Lily shouted.
"Choose you? Lily you rejected me over and over again. You had your chance, so many times." James laughed bitterly.
"I set boundaries and I built walls, so that no one could ever reach the scattered pieces of my soul. Because my biggest fear is people finding out how broken I am inside, how sad I am, how utterly out of control I am. And then you." She pointed an accusatory finger at him, "You came and I slowly let those boundaries vanish, hoping that you would love me for the scattered pieces of my soul. And all you did was give up and leave me hollow."
"I've fallen in love with people who have never loved me back." James shouted, the raw pain in his voice clear, "And finally, I do, and you come along and confuse me."
"Confuse you? How am I possibly confusing you?"
"Because I still fucking love you!" James shouted, his voice raw.
The world went silent around the two as Lily stared in shock at the boy before her and James stared in horror at the confession he just shouted.
Somehow they found one another in the silence that stretched between them, with a lust and desperation neither had experienced before.
His lips moulded against hers and Lily felt the probe of his tongue against hers.
Happiness bubbled up inside her and a smile she couldn't restrain played on her mouth.
When they pulled away the expression on James's face didn't look the same.
He looked distraught.
"I'm sorry Lily, I-I don't know." after a silent pause his voice started to raise.
"I don't know what I want, this is so hard. Please try and understand that.""How am I supposed to understand this when I don't even understand it myself?"
"I have to go." James looked down at the floor and turned away, walking out.
She ran after him shouting, "Fine, leave! Just walk away and give up!"
She slammed the door to the astronomy tower in his face and he heard her fall apart on the other side.
This wasn't unusual, all they did was argue anyway.
