(y/n)'s house

knock. knock.

with a big yawn, you rubbed at your lids, the world still swimming as the door creaked open, and a gentle, familiar voice wafted in.

"happy birthday to you...happy birthday to you...happy birthday dear, (y/n)...happy birthday to you~"

you sat up, hair sticking out in odd directions, just in time to see your father enter, cake balanced in one hand, a neatly wrapped present in the other (the bow being a little off-centre from the number of times he'd retied it).

the cake was a dream: airy vanilla crowned with an unapologetic amount of frosting, dotted with tiny pink flowers. a single candle trembled at the centre, its flame swaying like it was dancing just for you.

your father's smile was big and a little sleepy, but it shone with so much love that it filled your chest with adoration.

"happy birthday, princess," he whispered.

you blew out the candle—your wish still half-formed— then launched yourself at him without a second thought. he made a startled sound, staggered back a step, and caught you.

"you're getting so big," he stated, kissing the top of your head."how'd that happen?"

you giggled, clinging to his neck as he swayed you side to side like you were the most precious thing he owned. then curiosity tilted your head.

"where's mama?"

something changed in his expression. he scratched the back of his head and let out a funny little laugh that didn't quite sound real.
