mess hall

with back-to-back exams officially commencing, french became 13c's first victim. you and mikasa had met up earlier that morning, hoping to cram in some last-minute revision.

"ce sont les lapins qui ont été étonnés..." you recited, only to trail off when your so-called study partner's attention wandered.

mikasa wasn't listening. not to you, not to the passage, not to anything except the brunette student sitting across the hall with erwin. she watched him like a parasitic jaeger, like he was the only thing in existence.

you snapped your notebook shut with a pointed tap."mikasa, are you even pretending to listen?"

"i can't concentrate..." she mumbled, already spiralling.

"that scarf is distracting you. take it off."

you reached for the woollen offender, only for your best friend to swat your hand away with the melodramatic flair of a child refusing medicine.

"but it smells like ereh..."

"mikasa." your tone became the verbal equivalent of crossed arms."we have an exam in less than fifteen minutes; so, unless you wanna fail and repeat the year—"

she deflated instantly, shoulders slumping."sorry, (y/n). i just need to talk to him and sort this out. when i'm back, i'll focus. promise."

you didn't bother protesting as she rose from her seat. stopping mikasa ackerman from charging toward her emotional tornado of a boyfriend required divine intervention, not you. so while she dragged eren into a corner, where they quickly broke out into a heated discussion, you returned to your marking scheme, chin propped in your palm.

a shadow fell across your table.

"anything i can help you with?"

you looked up to find erwin settling opposite you, gesturing towards the booklet in your grasp.
