trost private library
having missed a week of classes, midterms massed on the horizon like a brewing squall. despite your stubborn insistence on independent study, levi had made it clear he'd be helping you catch up whether you liked it or not.
the library thrummed at capacity: vaulted stacks shouldering the ceiling, mahogany tables besieged by students, air tinged with parchment, ink, and a whisper of dust. you claimed a seat beside your boyfriend, opened your maths textbook, and let tate mcrae dissolve into a low murmur in your earbuds—white noise for the impending assault of proofs and functions.
numbers paraded mockingly before your eyes. the greater distraction, however, sat within arm's reach. levi's attention alternated between his work and yours; his fingers twirled a pencil with unfair grace. you refused to be hypnotised but were unsuccessful each time you tried.
your knuckles brushed. electricity shot up your forearm. you shuffled in your seat, trying to create some distance.
levi noticed.
"what are you doing?"
"i'm making room cause you're left-handed."
he blinked at the unnecessary gulf you'd put between you, unimpressed. then, without warning, he hooked two fingers around the back of your chair and reeled you in. wood scraped against the floor until your knees grazed.
you met his stare, wordlessly, except for the wraith of a smirk risking to break past his mouth.
your own traitorous grin surfacing, you leaned closer to him."you should try smiling more."
he brushed you off."do your work."
you tried. you did. but your mind had its own agenda. your hand drifted beneath the table, hesitating near his thigh, a silent war waged between impulse and restraint. you withdrew just as his fingers brushed against the inside of your forearm, tracing upward until they found your palm.
