the next day.

a soft knock pulled you from half-sleep.

"afternoon checkup," the nurse chirped from the doorway, rolling in the vitals cart."let's get these numbers before lunch, okay?"

you blinked away the haze and pushed yourself upright."sure."

the blood pressure cuff squeezed around your arm; the cold stethoscope brushed your collarbone. you winced when it grazed a bruise, a muted throb blooming beneath the bandages. the nurse noticed immediately and lightened her touch.

"still sore?"

"a little," you admitted.

she offered a sympathetic hum."that's normal. your body's been through a lot. but your heart rate looks much steadier than yesterday." she checked the monitor again, nodding in approval."you're healing faster than i expected. that's a good sign."

as she unplugged the monitor leads, her gaze flickered toward the bedside table, where the gift basket sat, now surrounded by even more items.

"looks like someone's been taking good care of you," she added with a warm smile."you must be pretty special."

you couldn't help but smile back.

levi had left hours ago, but somehow, his presence still lingered: in the blanket tucked around you, the sweater folded neatly over the chair, and the faint traces of his cologne still clinging in the air.

"alright, everything looks good for now," she began packing up the cart, snapping off her gloves and tossing them into the bin."i'll change the dressing later this evening, but if the pain gets worse before that, ring the bell, okay?"

"got it. thank you."

"get some rest." she flashed one last reassuring grin before slipping out of the room.

silence settled again, punctuated solely by the incessant beeping. you hugged a nearby pillow to your chest, attempting to calm your breathing as emotions threatened to spiral out of control.
