with levi still fast asleep, you slipped quietly from his apartment and caught the next bus out of town.
each turn of the wheels carried you farther away from the cobblestone streets, deeper into a place shrouded in the secrecy of past encounters—the old watchtower on the city's fringe, where the skyline kissed the horizon. it was the location where you and jean used to meet, far from the disapproving eyes of your father. it felt like trespassing into a living time capsule, emotions still clinging to the surroundings.
"thanks for coming."
jean's appreciation reached you. you stepped away from the railing, as he approached at a respectful distance, hands tucked into his purple varsity jacket. the patchwork of bruises and bandages cradling his face made your stomach churn.
"does it hurt a lot?"
he offered a lopsided smile, one that didn't quite reach his eyes."nah, just a little scratch."
"stop pretending, jean," you pressed."i know levi went too far. he told me you were trying to apologise."
"yeah," he admitted, rubbing the back of his neck as he moved closer to join you at the ledge."that was the plan..."

the view stretched under you, dusk fading into night as the world sparked to life, one light at a time. each victorian-style home glimmered with stories you'd never know. it was achingly beautiful, the kind of beauty that made your core compress with longing for simpler times.
your arms remained folded, pretending the chill in your bones was just from the wind while jean continued.
"seeing those pictures...it reminded me of everything i used to have. of everything i lost. and how much i'd give to get it all back," he admitted, considering his next dialogue carefully.
his regret was tangible, chipping away at the fragile barrier you'd built around yourself.
"i know i hurt you..." he whispered, his shoulders slumped, defeated."i know there's nothing i can do to change that. but...i've been trying. trying to be better. a better person. a better friend." his breath trembled as he exhaled."(y/n), i just hope that maybe someday you can forgive me."
