"seriously? that many times?"

armin nodded faintly, sliding his phone across the table. the screen was cluttered with missed calls stacked atop unanswered messages, each notification another futile attempt to exhume something long since buried.

"do you know why?" you quizzed, cocking your head."did you call her back?"

annie had been relentless lately. calls. messages. emails. she wanted to meet. to talk. to sift through the ruins of their past.

"i don't want to." armin spooned more yoghurt, his tone void of doubt."she's part of my past, and that's where i'd like her to stay."

you hummed thoughtfully, nudging your fork through the factured yolk on your plate."yeah...i get that. relationships aren't exactly linear."

one brow arched."are you talking about yours?"

startled, you caught the puzzlement on your friend's face."no—! i mean—just, you know, in general..."

"i thought so," armin smiled knowingly."levi seems like a good guy."

"he is," you confirmed, adoration creeping into your voice."he's really thoughtful. protective. caring. sexy—"

you froze.

armin choked.

your hands flew to your mouth. shit.

he stared at you for a beat before bursting into laughter, the sound loud and unrestrained. it was contagious, and soon, you found yourself laughing too, the mortification mixing with surrender as you tried to wave him off uselessly.

when the mirth finally faded, you exhaled."i just...sometimes it feels like there's this entire part of him i'll never reach. he barely talks about his past. or how he feels. and i wonder someetimes—does he not trust me enough? or is he hiding something?"

armin studied you, his usual bright countenance dimming into something sympathetic and understanding.

"(y/n)," he commenced gently."just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to, doesn't mean they don't love you with everything they have."
