flashback
underground city
hidden below the marleyan capital of liberio, lay the underground city. a filthy, forsaken labyrinth, far across the ocean and beyond the towering walls of paradis island. this abyss emerged in the ruinous wake of the eldian empire's collapse, a consequence of marley's rise to global domination following the great titan war (unknown - c. 743).
here, eldians deemed unfit for redemption were consigned to rot. branded as devils for ancestral sins, they were stripped of name and dignity, and forced into servitude as tools of marleyan vengeance—living relics of a war that refused to be forgotten.
in this tomb of twisted alleyways and suffocating dead ends, generations rose and fell without ever glimpsing the heavens. the surface was no more than an alluring myth: a place where sunlight caressed the earth, where the sky expanded without end.
happiness became a parable. morality corroded. ambitions disintegrated. survival, a toll too extortionate for any soul to afford.
levi was no exception.
his earliest years unfolded in the fragile refuge of a brothel, under the tenuous care of his mother, kuchel ackerman. she had little to offer, yet somehow gave him everything. against the encroaching darkness that consumed everything, kuchel had been a single flame, cupping levi in what little warmth she could muster.
she was his entire world.
underground brothel
"levi."
the sound of his name tore the young boy's focus from the thin blade of sunlight daring to creep through the fractured seam of stone overhead. it wasn't much of a window, merely a stubborn crack that refused to surrender to the encasing dark.
