abandoning your trolley without a second thought, you surged to the front to confirm what your eyes refused to believe. there, stationed behind the checkout counter, stood an acquainted face—armin arlert.
levi, ever the silent observer, lingered at your flank with a hawk-like intensity. but for once, he may as well have been a shadow. your focus belonged solely to the boy who had once been your most loyal ally.
"(y/n)?" armin's expression shifted from mild shock to delighted recognition."how long has it been?" his smile blossomed, illuminating the shop floor.
"far too long," you replied."i haven't seen you since...you stopped coming by the house."
a small smile formed on his mouth.
armin hadn't changed much. that same inquisitive spark danced in his pupils, the one that used to spill into hours of conversation about exotic lands and their impossible mysteries. you could almost see him again as the boy who'd show up at your doorsteps, clutching frayed volumes from his grandfather's collection, narrating vivid descriptions of foreign skies, until even you grew a passion for exploring the world.
but curiosity, as always, had its price. while his world expanded, the small-minded branded him an outsider, "heretic," since childhood. back then, armin always relied on you or his few other friends to shield him from bullies. and you did—you were quick to glare down anyone who dared sneer at him, reckless enough to pick fights you probably shouldn't have.
he, in turn, grew from timid to tenacious, his bravery and selflessness something you'd come to deeply respect.
"i'm sorry i never kept in touch," you resumed with a tinge of regret, watching him scan the groceries levi bagged."i felt awful about...asking you to quit."
armin waved a dismissive hand, that old gentleness still etched in every movement."don't apologise. i understand why you had to, even back then."
then he paused, studying you closely."did you ever sort things out with that guy?"
