Now
My heart was pounding in my ears- partly because I nearly fell off a speeding train to my death and the other half because I was in utter and complete shock. It was impossible. It had to be impossible.
“Well, well, what do we have here? It’s, Zabri, right? Of all the people to send… None the less, you are nothing but a bump road in the road. Varrick, proceed.” I slid my gaze over from him to Bataar Jr. I gave him a little snare; and pulled against the hands holding me. I then looked at Varrick, who looked at me.
“Right then,” He slowly turned towards Bolin, “Bolin, do the thing!”
“What thing?!”
“The thing! I never had to tell Zhu Li what thing!”
“I'm not Zhu Li, okay? Pretend I don't know anything about anything that's happening here, also pretend I don't want to build a super weapon or get my hands blown off!” I tilted my head at that, as Varrick grabbed a pair of pillars and begun working on the…thing, the super weapon.
A super weapon?
“Walk me through what you're doing. I want to know every detail of your work.” Varrick pushed Baatar Jr back an inch or so from him.
“You know, when I started working with the vines, the point was to find a clean, unlimited source of energy, not develop some spirity death ray.
A super weapon, of course! I shouldn’t expect anything less of Kuvira at this point… but a death ray… she was mad with power- I was right! I should have made a bet with my cousin though at the current moment I wasn’t too excited that I had been right. Kuvira was going mad like my great grandfather and great aunt. Wonderful.
“Clean energy! Sounds great! Who doesn't like that stuff? Let's do that instead!” Bolin slid over to them, shaking his head just a bit too much.
“Quiet!” Baatar Jr pushes Bolin back, “you're here to help, not talk. And you of all people, should realize that once a discovery is made, it is our responsibility as scientists to pursue it as far as we can- wherever it leads.”
“Whoa-whoa-whoa, are you telling me you have been tampering with spirit vines- DO YOU KNOW WHAT COULD HAPPEN?!”
Baatar Jr looked over at me, frowning. “Clearly I do, or at least we’re about to find out.”
I shook my head, my mind being over loaded. I had the sudden urge to kick Varrick in the worst of areas. How could he be so stupid? The spirits were the one thing- THE ONE STINKING THING- you don’t mess with… Of course he would mess with them.
“How would you know? You couldn't discover a wolfbat if it was building a nest in your butt.”
“You're pathetic… wolfbats don't build nests.”
“Ooh. You got me there, Dr. Science. You'll never know how it feels to give birth to genius, only to have it kidnapped, and raised by fools!”
“Are you done with your rambling, or do the guards need to encourage you to continue your work?” As Baatar Jr said that, he and another guard moved forward.
“Okay, okay, the last time we ran the current through the vine we couldn't control the power, so I'm trying something new to see if I can direct it.”
He was going to kill us all.
“Are you kidding me- you tried it once and it didn’t work and now you want to try it again?! You’re going to kill us all!”
