Then
Dear Kwon,
In three days’ time, Korra shall be off to the Southern Water Tribe for a few weeks. I hope this time away, back in the peacefulness of her home, that she will get better. She’s still not walking, and between you and me, I’m scared she may never walk again. I could never image never walking again. The thought makes the hairs on my neck stand up. I hope you are doing well, and that the Basic Training Camp isn’t killing you. I wish I would write more, but I’m due to go teach my first class- yeah, I’m finally a teacher! I’m nervous and excited all at the same time! I wish you could write me back more, I miss your letters. But knowing that you are getting mine makes it a tad bit easier on me… I miss you.
Zabri
Setting my pen down, I bit the corner of my bottom lip as my eyes scanned the paper. I wasn’t given much time to really chew on it though, because I glanced over to the clock and saw I only had a few minutes until my class started. All but falling from my chair, I yanked my curlers from my hair and rushed to find my ankle boots. I came rushing out of my room, hopping on one foot as I struggled to get my foot in my shoe. I realized, as I struggled down the hall, that I would never make it to my class on time by walking. So I went for option two. Once my shoe was on my foot, I tossed myself out of the nearest window- after checking it was opened- and in a smooth motion was flying in the air on my glider.
It was a short ride, and as I came in for my landing I could basically tell that my whole class was already waiting for me at the Spinning gates. I hit myself mentally as I came into my landing. As I came in, a small wave of air was pushed out, slightly blasting my students in the face.
They all looked at me for a few moments, before a small applaud erupted. I was slightly shocked and taken back by this- I had never been cheered for landing right. I gave a small, confused smile and a quick curtsy.
“Um, thank you, thank you. Settle down now, thank you. Well, hello new Nomads, my name is Princess Zabri Fa of the Fire Nation, Master Air bender. I am now also a teacher, to you all. I am so excited that I get the privilege of teaching you all. Thus, I request you call me Master Zabri or Master. On Air Temple Island I am not a Princess of the Fire Nation, I am a Master Air bender. As your teacher, it is my duty to not just teach you how to control and master your own air bending, but also teach you the history of your new roots.”
The group of thirty nine- I counted them as I spoke- stared at me. Closing my glider, I placed it on my hip, gaining a few ‘oh’ and ‘ah’ from my students.
“Air is the element of freedom, for those of you who didn’t not know. Air Nomads detach themselves from worldly problems and concerns; finding peace and freedom in order to solve any difficulties in their life. Air bending is prided for being almost purely defensive, as well as the most dynamic of the four bending arts preformed. Air benders can overwhelm many opponents at once with large and powerful attacks that can be very short but be proven as fatal; however, due to our pacifist nature, such attacks are rarely used. These are core values you all will be learning and living by, and hopefully teaching on to later air benders.” I gave a small smile to my class. “The one thing I didn’t mention about air bending is the key behind it. Which leads to our first lesson- be the leaf.” I walked over, and pulled a leaf from the bush, holding it up to the class. Before I could go on, a small disruption in the back, consisting of complains, stopped me.
“I’m sorry, but you have an issue?”
“Yeah I do- this lesson sounds stupid!” In the blink of an eye, I was up in the air, and landed next to the boy who was complaining. Tipping my head to the side, I measured the guy up. He was around my age, maybe a year older and had the hazel eyes of a natural born Fire Nationer.
“And what’s your name?”
“Fuoco.”
“Well, Mr. Fuoco, you haven’t even heard what the lesson is going to be about so how can you say it’s going to be stupid?”
“Because, this whole thing is stupid. I don’t need a class to be a good air bender- I already am one.”
“Is that so?” My eyebrow rose and my eyes narrowed.
“Uh, yeah.”
“Well then, Mr. Fuoco, how about a little, wager, a challenge?”
“What, what do you mean?”
“I mean, you and I compete. You win, you don’t have to attend any more of my lessons, but if I win, you shut up and sit there and allow me to teach my lesson in peace… and are never late to any class.”
“Psh- fine, what’s the challenge?”
I turned, and pointed to the spinning gates. “Those.”
“Those?”
“Yes, those. You get through to the other side without touching the spinning gates and you win. If you don’t, I win. Simple right?”
“Psh- yeah, I could do this in my sleep.”
I gave a bitter smile. “Wonderful, then you should have no issue.” I started towards the gates and Fuoco followed short after me, “Class, though this is not how I was expecting the class to go- consider what you are about to view as your first lesson.” With a swift swing of my arms, the gates were turning at their normal pace.
“Whoa- wait you didn’t tell me they’d be spinning!”
“Mr. Fuoco, what did you expect with the name ‘spinning gates’? Now, I’ll go first, since I did challenge you and to be a good example. Here hold my leaf.” I passed the leaf to a small blonde hair girl.
I entered the gates without a second thought, moving my body in a small, rithmetic beat. I couldn’t see Fuoco’s face, but in my mind I could image it being covered with a smirk, cocky with over confidence. It was like icing on top of the cake. Exiting the gates, I pushed myself into the air so that I landed right back in front of my class. They all applauded and cheered- all but Fuoco. True to the image in my head, he was oozing cockiness.
“Ready Mr. Fuoco?”
“Psh- easiest thing I’ll do all day!”
I simply nodded my head, giving the gates another blast of air.
“On my mark, get set, student- you- yes you, what’s your name?” I pointed to the small girl in the front who I had given my leaf to.
“Um, me, oh, um Terra.”
“Terra, take three and a quarter step back. Class, no one is to get past Terra. Now, Go!”
Fuoco took a step into the gates, but that was it. He was hit before he could even get his full body through. My students let out sounds of pity towards Fuoco as he was hit around like a ball, I, on the other hand, crossed my arms over my slightly puffed chest. It was almost a full minute of pain before Fuoco came tumbling out of the gates, landing at the feet of Terra. The class stared at him, and I took my place in front of them. Fuoco slowly rose up, rubbing his body.
“Mr. Fuoco, go take a seat. You see class; Mr. Fuoco never let me finish the explanation behind the title of today’s lesson. In order to be an air bender- the key to doing it successfully, is two things; 1. Flexibility, being able to move your body in a gentle, fluid motion yet not lose strength; and 2. Finding and following the path with the least resistance. That is what these air gates are meant to teach you… Let Mr. Fuoco’s mistake be your lesson- let me finish my introduction. Now, back to the class, everyone go sit down. We shall start off with some meditation before getting into some basic techniques and will finish the class with the air gates.”
