"You will marry the girl whom I have chosen for you. The details about her will be discussed by Atty. Choi. If you agree to marry her, 25% of my savings will be transferred to you right away. If you will disagree, the remaining 75% of the inheritance will be given to charity..."
Jung Kook's hands tightened into a fist after hearing this. Their lawyer and his godfather, Atty. Christian Choi, paused for a moment after seeing his already flustered face. He looked at him and gave a deep sigh.
"I apologize. Please continue." Jung Kook said coldly.
"This is the last part. Bear with me a few more minutes." Atty. Choi answered.
Jung Kook nodded then loosened his tie a bit.
"...the marriage should last for at least 10 years," Atty. Choi continued. "in case of your death, in less than a decade of marriage, 75% of the inheritance will be given to your wife should there be children born. Should there be no heir, the remaining 75% inheritance will be given to charity..."
Jung Kook ran his fingers through his hair while his lips curled.
"If you divorce your wife in less than 10 years of marriage, 100% of the inheritance goes to charity. However, If the divorce has been initiated by your wife, the rest of the inheritance will be given to you." Atty. Choi finished.
"How dare you. How fucking dare you." He mumbled." He remembered how his mother juggled four jobs just so she can raise him after his father left them when he was 16. And all those years that they were struggling, his good-for-nothing dad actually made it big in USA.
Atty. Choi put the papers down and started cleaning the lenses of his glasses. "I know this is difficult to process. You haven't seen the man since you were 19?"
"16." He corrected.
"Ah." The lawyer continued wiping his glasses with a cloth.
"Had he not been a client, I would punch this guy. He left all of us." Atty. Choi put back his glasses on. "All of things he worked hard for and it still didn't make him happy. Committing suicide. I guess guilt caught him."
Atty. Choi and his father were bestfriends. They attended the same university.
"Atty. Choi, how did my father meet this girl whom he wants me to marry?" Jung Kook asked, trying to change the conversation.
"Call me uncle. Am I not your godfather?" Atty. Choi scolded. Jung Kook chuckled.
Atty. Choi flipped through the papers and laughed a little.
Jung Kook looked at him intently, "He didn't mention anything to you...uncle?"
Atty. Choi laughed. "Do not cross-examine a lawyer." He rested his back on the swivel chair. "He did mention meeting a woman when he contacted me to arrange his last will and testament. says this woman saved her life. But no further details given."
A smirk formed on Jung Kook's lips. "That's just code for I'm scewing her." Jung Kook looked at his uncle. "So I'm either marrying his mistress or his child. What a sick joke."
"He's not pushing you to marry her." Atty. Choi cleared his throat. "If you don't agree, the 5 million dollar money on the bank goes to charity so does the properties and stocks that your father earned."
There was a long silence.
"However, think about it. You told me before that you always wanted to have your own publishing company. Marrying her alone gives you a quarter of the inheritance already. That should be enough to start."
His uncle is right. But Jung Kook's pride tells him otherwise.
Atty. Choi flipped through the pages again and hold a picture.
"I have a picture of the girl. Do you want to see her?"
Jung Kook shook his head in disapproval. "I don't like her if my father likes her."
Atty. Choi laughed. "You might. She's beautiful."
"I couldn't care less what she looks like." Jung Kook's voice became stern. "For all we know, she's the reason why my family broke." He looked at his watch. This was his mother's last gift before she passed away.
"The girl...did she agree to this already?
"Ah. I'm glad you asked." His uncle pulled out a card from his drawer. "Surprisingly, she did. He gave an address to Jung Kook. "That's where she stays. If you agree to marry her, she can move to the house that your father bought for you two."
Jung Kook's brows furrowed. He did not bother receiving the paper that his uncle handed to him. Without knowing the girl, he instantly felt resentment towards her.
"Uncle, I'll be honest. I don't want to see her. ever. Please can we do something?"
There was a long silence before Atty. Choi grunted.
"Marriage is finalized as a contract. It requires signatures, not contact." Atty. Choi then put the paper back to the drawer.
"Uncle, you are the best. Once I get my 25%, I will make sure that your office gets renovated." He smilingly said.
"This is against everything I believed in. But for you, a little excemption. May you have a happily married life." Atty Choi handed him a pen so he can sign his father's last will.
"Oh, I plan to." And finally he affixed his signature.
