It felt like no time had passed when Cole poked his head in the door.
"Dinner is ready guys! Zane wanted me to let you know. It looks great!"
"Yeah and don't take your time, or else Cole will eat it all! Jay said, also poking his head in the door from behind Cole. Then they rushed off.
Kai closed his laptop and we got up. He sniffed the air.
"Oh I love it when Zanes turn to cook." He exclaimed, as the smell of freshly roasted chicken drifted through the door.
"Yeah, he makes the best food." I laughed. "Unlike mine which always tastes terrible."
"Hey it's not that bad!" Kai gave me a friendly punch. "I like your cooking! Trust me, you have a talent."
I laughed. "Yeah I don't know, last time I cooked I burnt everything."
"Still tasted fine to me." Kai shrugged.
"Sure whatever." I said with a smile. Kai never let me talk bad about my cooking or anything else I did for that matter. As we walked to the dining room, Kai raced on ahead. I followed slowly. A smile across my face as I watched him excitedly run to the dinner table through the open dining room door.
I hoped Jay and Cole wouldn't bring up my crush on Kai at dinner. That would be awkward. Wu and Misako would be back. From wherever they had been today. Probably a weird date. It made me mad that my mother and Wu were getting along so well. I wanted my mother to be happy, but it was like she had forgotten all about my father. Like he never existed. Made me wonder if she ever liked him at all. She seemed to only have eyes for Wu now.
I was distracted as I heard Kai call out. "Hey Lloyd! Hurry up! Cole had already taken half a chicken!"
"Barely!" Coke cried indignantly. "You have already taken more than me, you greedy pig."
I laughed quietly as I made my way to the dining room. Everyone was there. I avoided looking at my mother and Wu. They didn't even seem to notice me anyway, they were too distracted talking and laughing with each other. About what I don't know, I had tuned out. I made my way to the other side of the table and sat down beside Kai as that was the only seat left. We usually sat beside each other anyway. I awaited my turn to get food. There were three roast chickens, a massive platter of vegetables, and three bowls of salad. It honestly wasn't heaps considering how many of us there was. Everyone was scrambling to serve themselves food. I just waited. I didn't like pushing in, so I often just served my food last. I glanced over at my mother. I saw her laugh at something Wu said. I didn't like it. I guess I shouldn't care though. She is allowed to date whoever she wants after all, it's not like my father will be coming back..
"I started serving yours already." Kai said, breaking me out of my thoughts as he held out a plate covered in delicious looking chicken, salad and vegetables to me.
"Is this enough for you?" His beautiful green eyes sparkled questioningly.
"Yeah that's fine, thanks." I mumbled, looking away and taking the plate from him. I knew my face was going red again. I couldn't help it. Kai was just so nice all the time. His beautiful eyes, his smile, agh.
I realised he hadn't even served himself yet, he had got food for me first. He had done this a few times before. It was small things like this that just kept making my crush on him get bigger and bigger.
I caught Jay watching us from across the table. I pretended I didn't notice his smug expression. Anxiety twisted in my stomach. Remember, we are just friends. I told myself.
