One week to the day of the Blythes' departure from Trinidad, the sun began to rise, casting a warm glow over the small bedroom of the Blythe home.
Not only was the sun rising on a new day, it was also rising on a new life.
In Anne's arms was James Matthew Blythe, her's and Gilbert's newborn son. He was born at 5:47 a.m. and he weighed 9 pounds and 3 ounces.
He was perfection.
Thomas and Joyce peacefully slept in the other room, blissfully unaware of their new baby brother. Not even Marilla knew, as Gilbert and Anne had James completely on their own. Though it was still a difficult birth, the two knew what to expect this time and had been able to enjoy it.
Anne laid in bed, staring at her son with the same wonder and awe that she had when first laying eyes upon Joyce.
"He's incredible," she whispered, kissing James' soft forehead. "Absolutely incredible."
Gilbert sat on the edge of the bed and ran his hand over his son's red hair that looked identical to his mother's and sister's.
"You both are," he murmured adoringly. He wasn't sure when or if they would have more children, but if they did, Gilbert was going to have to start referring to his wife as a real-life superhero. He had no idea how she had the strength to grow and push two literal human beings out of her body, yet she did.
Wow, he thought. Women are phenomenal.
"Hey," he whispered, tucking a wisp of hair behind Anne's ear to have her look at him. "I have a surprise for you, but it may wake James up."
Anne smiled. "I doubt it. He sleeps as deeply as you do. What is it?"
Gilbert got up and picked up his guitar before sitting in a chair by the bed. Slowly, he started strumming.
This is my love song to you
Let every woman know I'm yours
So you can fall asleep each night, babe
And know I'm dreaming of you moreYou're always hoping that we make it
You always want to keep my gaze
But you're the only one I see, love
And that's the one thing that won't changeI will never stop trying
I will never stop watching as you leave
I will never stop losing my breath
Every time I see you looking back at me
And I will never stop holding your hand
I will never stop opening your door
I will never stop choosing you, babe
I will never get used to youThis is my love song to you
It's not a momentary phase
You are my life, I don't deserve you
But you love me just the same
And as the mirror says we're older
I want to look the other way
You are my life, my love, my only
And that's the one thing that won't changeI will never stop trying
I will never stop watching as you leave
I will never stop losing my breath
Every time I see you looking back at me
And I will never stop holding your hand
I will never stop opening your door
I will never stop choosing you, babe
I will never get used to youYou still get my heart racing
You still get my heart racing for you
You still get my heart racing
You still get my heart racing for youI will never stop trying
I will never stop watching as you leave
I will never stop losing my breath
Every time I see you looking back at me
I will never stop holding your hand
I will never stop opening your door
I will never stop choosing you, babe
I will never get used to youAnne was crying by the time Gilbert finished. She was sure she had never heard a more beautiful and perfect thing in her life.
"Come here," she whispered tearfully, holding out her free arm. Gilbert smiled and climbed into bed next to her and James. The two shared a loving kiss.
"I love you so much," she whispered. "And I love this crazy, chaotic, emotional, momentous, beautiful life of ours."
"I do, too," Gilbert whispered back. "To all of the above."
James, Thomas, and Joyce would wake up eventually, and soon, all of Avonlea would be buzzing about the newest Blythe.
But right now, in this quiet, peaceful, early golden hour, Anne and Gilbert were the only two people in the world.
