Early life and education

Aquino was born on January 25th in 1933 as María Corazón Sumulong Cojuangco. She was the sixth child out of eight (2 of her siblings died in infancy). Her father, José Cojuangco was a former congressman and her mother, Demetria Sumulong was a pharmacist. Aquino comes from a family where her father and her grandfather were politicians and her Sumulong relatives were also politically influential.

To pursue her high school studies, she transferred to a Roman Catholic school and later when her family moved to the United States, she graduated high school from Notre Dame Convent School. In college she majored in French and minored in mathematics and graduated from College of Mount Saint Vincent. When Aquino had graduated college, she moved back to the philippines and studied law at Far Eastern University in 1953. In 1954 however, she discontinued her studies, married Benigo “Ninoy” S. Aquino Jr. and raised their kids.

Career

Following the assassination of Corazon Aquino’s husband in 1983, Aquino became active and visible in numerous demonstrations against the Marcos regime. She became a symbolic figure of the anti-Marcos political opposition. In order to remove doubts against his regime’s legitimacy and authority, Marcos surprised the nation with a snap presidential election in February 1986. With one million signatures urging Aquino to run in the election, she ran with Salvador Laurel as vice president and ended Marcos’ two decade rule.

She became the first female president of the Philippines and the only president with no personal political experience. As president, one of her first moves was creating the Presidential Commision on Good Government (PCGG) and was tasked to go after Marcos ill-gotten wealth.

Upon her death, Aquino was diagnosed with colorectal cancer and died of cardiorespiratory arrest at the age of 76. Aquino served as president for 6 years before she peacefully passed the title to Ramos.
