Whilst we've covered the origins of Halloween, have you ever wondered where the trick-or-treating comes from and why we dress up on Halloween? Yeah? Be sure to read on!
Celebrating Halloween was extremely limited in colonial New England due to the prevalent beliefs, so celebrating Halloween was much more common in Maryland and the southern colonies. As the Europeans immigrated to America, the beliefs and costumes meshed with the American Indians, and so emerged the American version of Halloween.
In the 1800s, a move was made in America to mold Halloween into a holiday more about community and neighbourly get togethers than ghosts, pranks and witchcraft. The first celebrations included "play parties". These were public events and celebrated the harvest. Neighbours would share stories, tell each other's fortune, dance, and sing. Borrowing from the Europeans, Americans eventually began to dress up in costumes and go from house to house asking for food or money.
At the turn of the century, Halloween parties for both adults and children became common. Newspapers encouraged parents to remove the frightening and grotesque from their Halloween celebrations. These efforts caused Halloween to lose most of its superstitious and religious overtones in the twentieth century.
