We're nearing the end of September and thus it is time to talk about self-care. Self-Care Awareness Month was founded by an organisation called "Evolve to Love" in September 2017 and has been celebrated ever since; to raise awareness of the benefits of regular, personal self-care.
When it comes to self-care, we are sure you know all about candles, bath bombs and face masks - that's the pretty and enjoyable side of self-care we all see around and love practicing. However, it's not all about the things we just mentioned. Self-care is more than that. Self-care is not always pretty.
We found this quote a while back somewhere on an instagram and it resonated:
It's quite far from the aesthetical imagery of ourselves sitting in a bathtub full of fluffy bubbles and enjoying a glass of wine - but it's just as important to know that self-care can also include (working on) overcoming any struggles we might currently deal with.
So how does this not-so-pretty version of self-care work and look like? Just like with the bubble version, it depends on the individual and on what works for you.
It might include:
🌟 making time for doctor appointments
🌟 giving yourself the permission to not be helpful
🌟 saying 'no' to things you don't have time for/are not comfortable with
🌟 planning how to pay off any debts you might have
🌟 stocking up your pantry so you don't ever have 'nothing to eat'
🌟 ending toxic relationships
🌟 cancelling all plans for the day
🌟 tackling that one email that's been sitting in your inbox for a while now and gives you anxiety every time you think about it
🌟 literally anything which, at first glance, might seem scary but you know it will give you peace of mind once you deal with it!
That. All of that and more counts as self-care too. It's about doing something beneficial for yourself - and your future-self as well, even when you don't want to do it at first. And if you try to combine both pretty and not-so-pretty versions of self-care, you're absolutely winning in our eyes!
Just please remember that every small victory counts. You don't need to do it all at once to feel accomplished. Take it step-by-step, find your own pace, and you can do anything you put your mind to. We believe in you!
