PTSD, or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, has been documented in humans in one way or another for centuries. The earliest known record of this is in a poem from 50 BC by Hippocrates about a soldier who was haunted by flashbacks from a traumatic battle. Since then, PTSD has made several appearances, notably during times of war such as the Hundred Year's War between England and France. Even Shakespeare's literature makes reference to the disorder. 

PTSD gained new meaning in the United States with the Civil War during the 1800s when the disorder became widespread among the traumatized masses. It was known by several different names, including "railway spine". It wasn't until 1915 that the term "shell shock" was used in medical literature. 

The onset of World War I pushed the disorder further into the limelight with soldiers returning from the battlefield with the trauma of war. During this time, rudimentary efforts were made to treat PTSD such as electric shock treatment. It was only after 1950 that modern treatments such as group therapy were introduced.

When the Vietnam War started, there was an ongoing research into PTSD by psychologists on Holocaust and rape victims, helping in the understanding of the disorder. This study proved that several kinds of trauma can lead to different kinds of PTSD. In today's world, PTSD is considered treatable in most cases.

After a member of the North Dakota National Guard commited suicide after two tours in Iraq, Senator Kent Conrad felt that there should be a day to honor him and other people like him. At his urging, the Senate recognized June 27 as National PTSD Awareness Day. In 2014, this was extended to encompass the whole month of June to raise awareness about the disorder.

How to celebrate PTSD Awareness Month?

1.  Education

It is important to be aware of the disorder and its effects on not just the individual suffering from it, but on the people around them. With education, it is possible to understand the nature of trauma and know that there are ways in which a person can overcome their struggles.

2. Donation

A staggering number of PTSD cases can be found in war veterans. To help them, several funds and campaigns are set up where you can donate resources such as the Wounded Warrior Project or Military with PTSD.

3. Spread the Word

One of the main purposes of PTSD Awareness month is to educate others. Share information and resources about the disorder. Reach out to friends and family to make sure they are doing ok. Your efforts may save someone's life.
