Honor our LGBT elders day, is a relatively new celebration that was started in 2015 by Nate Sweeney. It's celebrated yearly on May 16th to recognize what our elder generation did for the LGBT community's rights.
The history of LGBT rights started in 1867 with Karl Heinrich Ulrichs who was the first academic that we know of who publicly defended homosexuality. Of course, he was shut down. It wasn't until 1897, 30 years later, that the Scientific-Humanitarian Committee was formed in Berlin, Germany. The Scientific-Humanitarian Committee was the first LGBT organisation in history.
It took a few more years before magazines, poetry, novels and movies where the theme was LGBT began to be published. "Les Mouches fantastiques" was an underground magazine in Montreal, Quebec that was the first that we know of to publish LGBT-themed articles. The magazine was published between 1918-1920.
The first worldwide pro-gay movie was a German production, Different from the Others (1919) while the first male on male kissing was Wings (1927), an American silent war film set during World War I. While the first pro-gay movie was released in 1919, the first poetry wasn't released until 1923 by Elsa Gidlow and the first novel, The Well of Loneliness, was released in 1928.
During the 50s and 60s the community started to grow bigger. More people started coming out as lesbian and gay, and in the 70s, the community grew even bigger. In Chicago on June 27th, 1970, the first gay and lesbian Pride Parade was held, followed by a march in New York City and a parade in LA on June 28th.
The rights the LGBT community has today didn't occur by accident. Our LGBT elders worked hard to gain rights and social acceptance. Today we're still learning about the LGBT community with a lot more acceptance than our elders received.
— 1924, Henry Gerber establishes the Society for Human rights, the first gay rights group in the United States.
— 1969, The Stonewall riots began in New York City.
— 1973, The American Psychiatric Association removes homosexuality from the official list of mental illnesses. Being gay or lesbian is no longer considered a mental illness.
— 2004, Massachusetts becomes the first state to legalize same-sex marrige.
