In 1945, diplomats from the United Nations met and on one of their agendas, was to discuss setting up a global health organization. On April 7th, 1948, World Health Day was celebrated for the first time.
World Health Day 2021 focuses on building a fairer and healthier world for everyone. In recent years, countries in the Western Pacific have experienced a growth in migration, urbanization and economics. The growth created opportunities for better lives, but it also left many behind. Due to the pandemic, the recent health gains have decreased and pushed more people into poverty and food insecurity. It has also amplified gender, social, and health inequities.
As part of the year long global campaign, this year's topic is taking action to eliminate health inequities to build a fairer and healthier world. The campaign highlights WHO's constitutional principle that "the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health is one of the fundamental rights of every human being without distinction of race, religion, political belief, economic or social condition."
We all know that the world is unfair and unequal. In some places, it's hard for people to reach their full health potential, while in other places, they thrive. The current pandemic has hit the world hard, but in places that are already vulnerable, more exposed to diseases and are less likely to have quality healthcare resources, the pandemic has been even harder.
WHO is calling all leaders to take a step forward in decision making to ensure a new, better future where everyone has good living and working conditions to have good health.
