The Site
Kellie's Castle is an unfinished mansion by William Kellie-Smith. The mansion is built in a Moorish revival and Indo-Saracenic style as a gift for Kellie-Smith's wife and to snub the bureaucratic circles in the British Malaya who had no faith in him being able to make a fortune which he did. He had a penchant for the weird and wonderful and combined different styles of architecture, bricks and marble imported from India, and Tamil workers to bring his vision to life.
Poor investments drained Kellie-Smith's wealth and poor relations with the administrators put him in a difficult spot. Yet what really stopped the mansion from completion was his death of pneumonia in Portugal at the age of 56.
After his death, his wife and children could not bear to set foot on the property or to return to Malaysia. So the property was sold off to tea harvesters who had no interest in completing it. Soon the mansion became derelict and was surrounded by the jungles.
The Ghost
Some mysterious rumours circulated the mansion such as the discovery of three underground tunnels.
A couple visiting the area for nature and wildlife photography claimed to see ghostly figures standing in the window frames. It is said that Kellie-Smith, despite dying in Portugal, haunts the second floor of the mansion. The reason most give for this is his disappointment over his grand vision never being completed.
Others claim that his daughter's spirit haunts what would have been her bedroom. Still others claim that the workers who died there still reside in the mansion as spirits.
Current Situation
Kellie's Castle exists to this day and is open to tourists who can take a private tour from Kuala Lumpur (two hours away) to fully immerse themselves in the history and architecture of the place.
