What does the name 'World Tea Day' bring to mind? Most probably, the first thought that crossed your mind was that this was a holiday about drinking tea. Well, it's not.
In 2005, trade unions, small time tea manufacturers and civil society organisations within Asia and Africa banded together to launch the International Tea Day campaign to address the very real issue of living wages of tea workers as well as the prices of tea produced by small tea producers. A significant event in this campaign was the International Tea Day Conference held in New Delhi were the members attending the conference came out with the International Declaration, proclaiming the rights of workers as well as the small time growers. While the day does not have an official status such as some other globally celebrated events aimed at raising awareness, World Tea Day helps recognise the vulnerable position of tea workers. Every year, the day also sheds lights on other related issues such as climate change, technology and trends in production and consumption of tea. Seminars are held with over 150 representatives from tea organisations to discuss the pervading issues in the tea industry.
