She's done nothing wrong, so I at once come to her defence. "It's okay. You didn't do anything wrong." To prove my point I take hold of her hand and give her a small smile.
She smiles back at me and looks down into the Chasm. After a few moments of silence, she says. "You should get that cleaned up. It might get infected."
How come she's so smart? "You're Divergent aren't you?" This makes her snap towards me.
"H...How do you know?" She asks.
"Because only an Erudite can be so smart and a Dauntless so brave." I tell her.
She blushes a bit and then says. "Please don't tell anyone."
"I won't. I'm one too." I tell her.
"You're Divergent too?" She asks.
"Why're you so surprised?" I ask her.
"Because I can't imagine you anywhere except Dauntless." She replies.
"Do you still want to help me?" I ask her. She nods and we get up.
I go to the public bathrooms while Tris goes off to get a change of clothes for me. As expected there is no one there. I walk to one of the mirrors. The damage is pretty bad.
I have a bruise on my cheek and another one of my forehead. The walk made my back hurt. I'm pretty sure that it's torn. I'm about to take it off when the door opens and Tris steps in. There are some clothes and a couple of ice packs in her arms.
"You should clean up your back first. It looks the worst." She says.
I nod in agreement and take off my shirt. When I turn around to look at her, she's staring at the floor and it makes me realize that this must be awkward for her.
"I'm sorry." I say.
"It's okay. Just wet this cloth and clean it." She instructs and I do as she says.
I try to reach out to my back but I can't. I give up after a few tries and slump against a sink.
"What's wrong?" She asks me.
"Can't reach there." I tell her and then something comes to my mind. "Wait. I can't. But you can."
"Me? You want me to clean it?" She asks. She was clearly not expecting this.
"Yeah. But you don't have to if you don't want to." I tell her.
She takes the cloth fom me saying. "No. It's okay. I'll do it."
I turn around and take a deep breath to steady myself. The cloth makes me wince. It hurts and provides relief at the same time. I clench my teeth as she finishes.
"Done." She finally says after what seems to be hours.
I pick up a shirt from the pile of clothes and put it on. "Thanks." I say.
She doesn't reply, so I ask. "What?"
"What are we doing so close to each other? Aren't we supposed to hate each other?" She asks.
"We are. But we're just supposed to. We don't have to." I tell her.
"What are you trying to say?" She asks, raising an eyebrow.
"What I'm saying is that we don't have to be enemies. We can give to shot at being friends." I explain and I mean what I say.
"What is your side of the story?" She asks me.
"What story?" I ask her.
"Our parent's story." She says.
"Oh. Andrew played a prank on my grandfather. He thought that it was Marcus so he had to pay a severe price for something he didn't do." By the time I finish speaking Tris is frowning.
"What's wrong?" I ask her.
"My father told me that your's tricked my grandfather. And that he had to pay the price for something that he didn't do." She tells me.
"Then who's story is the right one?" I ask frowning too. She shrugs in repy.
I want to tell her what I have in mind. So, I loose no time. "Look! The point is that this is our parent's problem. Why should we worry about it? We should leave it to them to solve."
"Basically, you want us to be friends?" She asks me.
"Yeah." I simply reply.
"What happened between our parents is their problem. We shouldn't let this bother us. We should be friends. I agree." She holds out her and I shake it.
