Today in school my veins are pumped full of adrenaline. During class it is hard to sit still and listen to the teacher. The moment Tris sits down behind me in History, I turn around and say.
"Is it just me or..." I trail off. But I know that she understands because she smiles and says. "No. It's just you. It happens the first time you try it. But I'm glad you enjoyed it."
"For some time I didn't mind the height." After a pause I add. "All thanks to you."
Tris looks up from her book and leans forward to press her lips to mine. Just a second later, the teacher walks in forcing me to turn around. And class begins.
When school finishes Tris leaves the room a few minutes before I do, to meet Christina. I am about to leave when Zeke out of nowhere, appears in front of me.
"Hey! What's the rush?" He asks.
I raise an eyebrow at him, which he understands. "Right. Of course, Tris."
We start walking together till Shauna sneaks up behind us and puts her arms around Zeke's neck. After that I look away, so that I don't have to see what follows.
While they get their "business" done, I look around for Tris.
In front of me is the school exit. To one side is a group of Erudite girls, going through their notes or something. When I look behind me I see Tris walk up to me.
"Where were you?" I ask, even though I already know the answer.
"Christina." She replies. She's breathing heavily. Either she ran here or something happened. But before I can ask, Zeke starts pulling towards the tracks.
The moment we get off the train, she says. "I'll see you at lunch."
With this she walks away. I frown after her departing figure. Usually, she's not ready to let go of me. What has gotten into her?
Troubled by Tris's behaviour, I go to my own department to drop off my things. When I get to the dinning hall there is no sign of her. Though, I do spot Christina in the food line. Right behind her is Zeke. I mange to wedge myself between them.
"Zeke..." Christina turns around but stops when she sees that it's not him but me.
"Hi Tobias!" She greets me.
"Hey. Uh...I was wondering if things between you and Tris were...okay?"
She looks startled by question. "Yeah. Of course. Everything's fine. Why do you ask?"
"It's just that Tris has been acting weird since school." I reply.
She sakes her head. "Nope. She was perfectly fine when we met in school." All of a sudden a grin appears on her face.
Knowing Christina, this can't be good. "What?"
"Maybe it's that time of the month." She tells me and at once I feel like throwing up. I grab a plate of salad and make my way to the first table I see.
Soon Zeke, Shauna, Uriah and Christina join me. After a few minutes of watching me play with my food Shauna asks.
"Tobias, what aren't you eating?"
"You really wanna know?" I ask, looking at Christina. Shauna points at Chris and raises an eyebrow. The question gets conveyed "Did she say it?" I nod my head.
At once she shakes her head vigorously and says. "No thanks. I'd rather not hear it."
Throughout lunch Tris does not come. Maybe Christina was right but I have this gut feeling that she wasn't. After lunch everyone heads towards the Pit and I trail along behind them until I see Tris coming down a hallway.
At once I detach myself from the group and go to her. When I get near her I see that she's lost deep in thought. When she's almost on top of me she realises that I'm there.
She looks startled by my presence and I don't know, afraid too. "Hey! I missed you at lunch."
"What?" She asks, as if I just snapped her out of a deep thought.
"I said that I missed you at lunch." I repeat.
She takes a minute to process what I said. "Oh. Um...I had to...take care of something." She struggling for words.
"Are you okay?"
This gets her attention. "Yeah. Why?"
"You've been acting...different since school." I tell her.
"I have?" She asks, her voice wavering.
I hold out my arms and she collapses into them, sobbing. I rest my head against hers and rub her back. After a few minutes I pull away and wipe away the tears before kissing her forehead.
"You can talk to me, you know." I tell her.
She sniffs and croaks. "I know. It's nothing. Just got worked up. Are you free?"
"For now? Yes. But I have to work in the control room this evening." I reply.
She mumbles an "okay" before falling back into my arms.
