I walk to the initiates dorm to wake them up.
Last night I stayed up late thinking about Kate. I really like her. But I have no idea if she likes me or not. This is honestly the worse situations I can be in. I like someone but can't tell her and now I have to meet her everyday for the next couple of weeks.
When I walk into the corridor where the dorm is, I see Tris walking towards me. No one else is in sight. I stop outside the door and greet her. "Good morning. Best of luck." "Thanks. You too." She replies as she passes me. I open the door and go in. I grab a flashlight from the supply closet and bang it on the railing.
This makes everyone stir and. "Meet me in the Pit in five minutes."
I go back to the Pit where Evelyn, Lauren and Tris are waiting. Both the groups of initiates arrive and so does Eric. He lets them know what they're up against.
"There'll be two stages of initiation. First physical and second mental. In the end only 12 of you get to stay."
After his little briefing he leaves and we all get to work. I take the transfers to where they'll be working out.
"You have today to prepare yourself. From tomorrow any of you can be asked to fight anyone." I warn them.
They at once scatter. Some pair up, others move to the punching bags. One of them is Kate. She tries her best to punch but I can clearly see that she's not putting in the right effort. I move up behind her and speak in my best instructor like voice.
"You're weak." This makes her jump and she turns around to look at me. "You scared me." "One of the things the Dauntless doesn't say." I remind her. She turns back to punching. "Try to do it like this." I demonstrate a few simple punches that have the punching bag swinging in no time.
When I finish I look around to see that everyone has stopped to watch me. "The rest of you can try that too. Back to work!" After shouting these orders, I go back to Evelyn who's scribbling down notes.
"Those were some really good punches." She remarks still writing. This catches me off guard because none of my parents ever complement me. But finally I say. "Thanks." She nods at me and goes back to work.
When it's one o'clock I announce lunch. "Everyone go have lunch. But be back by 2.30." This announcement is followed by cheers. Everyone files out and I'm the last one to leave. I pass by the dorm on my way to the hall when I hear water running. I go in and frind Kate bent over one of the stands. "Are you okay?" I ask frightening her again. "You've got to stop doing that. And yes I'm fine. I just hurt my hands."
She turns off the tap and drys her hands. Then we walk together to the hall for lunch. It's already full. So, is the table where the initiates are sitting. I see that there are two seats empty. One next to Tris and the other next to Zeke's brother Uriah.
"Come on." I say to Kate and move towards Uriah. I sit down next to him and Kate next to Tris, opposite from me. "Hey! You're Four's initiate, right?" Uriah asks her. "Yeah." She replies. "So, considering the fact that you're tring not to socialize. You must be the Stiff." He adds. Tris comes to her defense before I can say anything. "That's the most out of fashion word you could've used."
Zeke comes over and says. "I saved you a seat but it got taken. I guess you're stuck with my stupid brother for now." "Stupid brother." I follow Zeke's lead and tease him. "Yes! True that I'm your brother but I'm not stupid!"
I get thrown out of conversation when Eric shows up and asks me to come with him, I don't ask why and get up. He leads me to his office and then pounces on me.
"You know that you're her instructor, right?" He barks. "Whose?" I ask pretending to be confused. "Kate's!" He exclaims. "What about her?" I ask. "Don't act all innocent with me!" He tells me referring to how I demonstrated that punch just for her, then stopped by to chek on her and then found her a seat to sit.
All these things point to me liking her. Which Eric already knows.
