Seungkwan wanted to go to the mall, and Vernon wasn't convinced. See, Seungkwan's little self is easily distracted, wanders off, and has almost gotten lost multiple times. So Vernon wasn't convinced that it was a good idea. But Seungkwan really wanted to go. He'd seen a new stuffed animal online, recognizing the store as one in their local mall.
"Please!" Seungkwan pleaded, pulling out all of his weapons for this battle. "Kwan, remember the last time we went to the mall?" Vernon started. "You said you needed some new pants, almost got lost, and came home with not only new pants but three new stuffies." Seungkwan smiled sheepishly, quickly replacing his look with a determined one. "I swear I won't almost get lost this time! And I'm only getting one or two stuffies!"Seungkwan must be a master convincer because here they were... At the mall. Exactly where Vernon didn't want to be. "You have to stay by my side, okay? If you see something you like, need to go to the bathroom, or anything of the sort, tell me. We're here because you promised you wouldn't get lost," the caregiver reminded. "Mhm!" Seungkwan replied, barely listening to Vernon. The two made their way into the mall.
Vernon should've seen this coming, he really should've. The caregiver had seen a friend, stopping to talk for just a second. In that brief moment, Seungkwan had wandered off. Now, Vernon and his friend, Joshua, were running around the mall trying to find the little. The two kept in constant communication, telling each other where they had checked and where they hadn't.
Seungkwan, on the other hand, was just realizing that Vernon was nowhere to be seen. Starting to panic, the little sat down on a bench and tried to be big. It wasn't working. Standing back up, he started walking, completely forgetting to stay put in hopes of someone finding him.
The little didn't stop walking until his legs got tired. He hadn't shed a single tear, no matter how much he wanted to, but a feeling of defeat washed over him. Finding an empty corridor, Seungkwan put his back to the wall and sank down onto the floor. Tears suddenly rushed over his rosy cheeks, quiet sobs racking through his body at the thought of not being found.
Back to Vernon and Joshua, who were still searching no matter how tired they were. They had searched all of Seungkwan's favorite stores, with no luck, and were onto stores that might've caught the little's eye. Just as Vernon came out of a particularly colorful store, he felt his phone buzz in his hand. It was a text from Joshua.
Found him.
Winding his way through people, Vernon moved as fast as he could to get to where Seungkwan was. Joshua had texted him where they were, telling Vernon to hurry. Once he had passed the food court and the noise died down, he could hear it. Seungkwan's cries. The closer he got to the restrooms, the louder the cries, and the more guilt he felt.
When he finally got there, Vernon immediately knelt down and hugged his crying little. Not a word was spoken as the two held each other tightly, Joshua watching on feeling relieved. "I'm sorry," Seungkwan said after a while. Vernon pulled away, smiling and holding the (physically) older's face. "No, I'm sorry... I should've kept a better watch over you. I know you, and I should've paid more attention."
Seungkwan sniffled, finally able to pull himself out of little space. "It's not your fault, Nonie. I know I can't tell you not to blame yourself but know I'm not gonna blame you. It was a mistake on both of our parts." Vernon nodded, helping Seungkwan off of the floor. "Let's go get that stuffie!"
Joshua ended up going with them to get a stuffie for his best friend, parting ways with Vernon and Seungkwan outside the mall. "Little me's gonna love it," Seungkwan said, holding up the stuffed unicorn. Vernon smiled at the happy boy, glad that Seungkwan wasn't crying anymore. "Yeah, little Kwannie has a thing for unicorns."Little Seungkwan was ecstatic to own the unicorn. "Thank you for taking me to the mall Nonie!" he said while throwing his arms around his caregiver. Vernon chuckled, hugging Seungkwan back. "You're welcome Kwannie, but let's stay away from malls for a bit." The little nodded in agreement, the two's laughter light.
After playing with the new stuffie for a bit, Seungkwan started yawning. "Kwannie- Oh perfect, it's time for bed!" Vernon said when he entered the room. Seungkwan smiled sleepily, standing up and going with Vernon to get ready for bed.
Once the two had brushed their teeth and changed clothes, they were ready for bed. "C'mon Nonie," Seungkwan called from the bed. Vernon smiled softly, coming out of the bathroom and sitting on the edge of the bed. "I'm here. Let's get some rest, yeah?" His little nodded, laying down and waiting for Vernon to do the same.
"Did you know I was real scared when I was lost?" Seungkwan muttered just loud enough for Vernon to hear. Before he could apologize, however, the little continued. "But then I thought "Nonie's gonna find me, he's great at hide-and-seek!" and I's not so scared anymore... Thank you for being the bestest at hide-and-seek, Nonie..."
Only when the two were finally tucked away under their blankets and in each other's arms did Seungkwan fall asleep. Vernon smiled unconsciously, brushing the hair from his little's face. "I promise I'm never gonna lose you again... I love you, Kwannie..." And under the pale moonlight, shining through their window and touching their faces, the two were sound asleep.
