June 1976

It started with a fracture.

The bonding and subsequent rumors going around about the two of them, were the perfect thing to play off of. They'd distance themselves from each other this way.

It had to be slow, gradual, and it had to be Severus.

To help this along, he spent more time around his fellow Slytherins and less time around Meae and Lily.

Oh but he missed them terribly.

The only Slytherin worth standing was Regulus Black, he was in the same year as Meae. He had loads of potential, and was decent towards Meae which Severus appreciated.

It was the others he couldn't stand.

Avery had a particular mean streak, but he was a coward.

Lestrange and Bellatrix Black knew how to keep appearances, but sometimes Severus could see a particular twinkle of pure insanity behind Bella's eyes.

It unnerved him.

Rosier and Wilkes were alright, they're weren't particularly outspoken, and definitely not the brightest blokes in the bunch, but they kept peace with Severus alright.

Narcissa Black was really the only one actually nice to him, though it was hard to get a measure on her.
Severus never knew exactly where her loyalties lied, it caused him to walk slightly on eggshells around her.

This week though Severus cut himself off from practically everyone. Part was in preparation for his OWLs, the other part was in preparation for what he had to do.

He'd prepared the week prior by making sure he got some upper hand over The Stupid Marauders, and the rivalry between them. He'd made sure the Gryffindor's saw him hanging around the older Slytherin group. He made equally sure to be present when they tormented the other students, though he had yet to take part in their cruelty.

Severus could tell Lily was concerned over his recent behavior, Meae played her part well, but he knew she too was growing concerned. He wanted to reassure them both, but he couldn't. Not with wandering ears around every corridor of the castle.

The real epic, began the day before their DADA and Transfiguration OWLs.

Severus was just leaving the library after having studied the past few hours, it was nearing curfew. the time had been lengthened slightly to allow students a few more hours of studying in the midst of exams.

He hadn't been paying attention to where he was heading, too busy checking over his notes in a last ditch attempt of retaining information.

He ran headfirst into a wall.
