October 1992
Severus has noticed Meae becoming increasingly distracted lately. She'll be talking to him one moment, then she'll trail off and start staring into space as if trying to figure something out.
He wasn't sure how to ask her. It could be her clicking information to memories in her head, but he noticed something that made him worry.
Every time, just before she came back to herself, her eyes flashed that familiar green for just a second. Never long enough to notice if you weren't paying attention to it.
But Severus always paid attention to her.
Harry, Ron, and Hermione had just escaped from nearly-headless-Nick's deathday party. The whole thing was weird and uncomfortable for the trio, so they snuck out as Nick was giving his speech.
They were talking about the party still when Harry heard it for the second time.
Tiimmeee too kiiillllll.....
The voice sent shivers up Harry's spine, but he was determined to find out where it was coming from. He took off down the corridors following the voice as fast as he could. He was almost there, the voice was getting closer, louder. He barely recognized the feel of water in his shoes, before he collided with a body.
He looked up, staring into the wide panicked eyes of Miss Night.
"Did you hear it?" She asked before she left him standing there and turned around another corridor.
Miss Night could hear it!? He wasn't insane right? If someone else could hear it that meant something!
Ron and Hermione had finally caught up to him, slightly out of breath.
"Wha-"
"AHHHHHHH!"
The trio turned wide eyed to each other before tearing off around the corridor they had just seen Miss Night go in.When they turned the corner they saw Miss Night crying on the floor, her head in her hands. On the wall opposite her hung Mrs. Norris, and words worn in blood.
Severus started to rush out the Great Hall the second he heard her scream, as did many of the other staff.
He hadn't heard her scream like that since...
He promised himself he'd never hear it again.Severus was mad in his race through the students, practically shoving any who dared get in his way.
He couldn't let anyone touch her.
He had to get to her first. Why are there so many fucking students!?
Finally as he was getting closer, he could faintly spot some sort of red writing on the wall ahead.
That wasn't important right now.
At long last he finally broke through the crowd of students, taking in his surroundings. He saw the Potter boy leaning down to Mason, who was on her knees head in hands, about to lay his hand on her shoulder.
"Don't touch her!" He barked startling the boy away a few feet.
Severus kneeled in front of her, hovering his hands between them in the air.
"Meae, is it your eyes?" He asked quietly
She silently nodded keeping her hands Over her face.
"Ok. Can I touch you?" He asked her again "We need to move you from here, there are too many students."
She nodded again.
"Severus." He turned behind him to the voice
Professor McGonagall was looking on at the two in sympathy.
"I need to move her from here." He told her
She nodded at him.
"Take her with you and please, escort your house to their dormitories."Severus nodded before turning back to Meae
"I'm going to pick you up now, ok?" He told her before placing a hand on her back and gently moving one behind her knees."Hide your face in my robes." He whispered.
"SLYTHERIN HOUSE BACK TO YOUR COMMON ROOM! Let's go!"
He started ushering the way to the dungeons, making sure the whole of his house followed behind him.
After he had made sure every one of students was safely in the common room. He turned down the corridors towards the teachers quarters. Quickly finding his room and getting them both inside. He set her down gently on the lounge and took a step back from her immediately.
"What do you need?" He asked her.
It took her a moment, but finally she lowered her hands revealing glowing green eyes with red tendrils of light starting to pour out of them.
He silently nodded before crouching in front of her.
He raised his right palm until it hovered over her heart.
Not touching.
Never touching until she said so.
She nodded at him and he placed his palm on top of her heart.
The red tendrils of light started to move from her eyes, to her neck, to her shoulders, to her heart. Finally as they reached the place Severus's hand touched, they moved from her body into his own.
Red light turned green as it ran like veins up his arms to his own heart.
Severus kept his focus until the green faded from her eyes once again.
"Better?" He asked
"Yes" she nodded at him before looking at him "I'm sorry." She said.
He knew what she meant.
For having to do this,
For keeping her secrets,
For being weak,
For not remembering,
For being born...
He knew what she meant.
"No matter what?" He asked her.
Mason smiled at him sadly
"No matter what."
