October 1974

It had been weeks since Mason told Severus about her magic, and here he still was, scouring the library for an answer.

He just needed something...

Anything really.

Yet he'd been here every day, spending all his free time uselessly flipping page after page, trying to find any sort of answer to their dilemma.

He was still turning up empty but he want- no, he needed an answer.

Severus refused to lose his best friend. He especially refused to lose her to magic, the thing that brought them together, of all things.

And so, Severus had made the library and all its knowledge, his new home.

He'd combed over everything he could, focusing particularly hard on topics such as Uncontrolled Magic, Magical Experimentation, and Magical Bindings.

His research thus far had brought him null. The closest thing he could find to the arising problem they were faced with, was Obscurials.

Even that wasn't quite right.

At the moment, Mason would be considered by the Ministry as an Obscurial, even though she wasn't yet.

If Severus didn't find a solution soon, he had no doubt Mason would eventually turn into one. The magic created inside her was strong, and now overpowered, thanks to those muggle's treatment of her.

From what Severus understood, Mason had been born with the ability to create magical energy.

She should have adapted as she grew, but for some reason she didn't.

Something had kept her from growing accustomed to the increasing amount, but what?

THE BINDING.

Yes, that made more sense.

Severus pushed aside the books in front of him as he searched for the one he needed.

Dumbledore placed a binding on her when she was a infant. That binding must of stopped the magical energy from growing, but didn't stop its ability to grow.

Severus hastily flipped through the pages of the book now in front of him.

He stopped when he found what he was looking for.

Bindings are notoriously strong magic, though their durability can be affected by outside factors such as strong spells meant to counteract them, the mental stability of the bound, and an overwhelming increase in whatever was being suppressed.

IE: A damn will hold back water from flooding a valley. Should something damage it, it can no longer do as it used to and will flood. If the original structural integrity is not as strong as needed continuous wear will eventually win out and it will flood. If too much water continuously puts pressure on one side, the damn will fracture and the valley will flood.
