Severus could admit he had been nervous for Mason's sorting. she would have made an excellent Slytherin, but he knew given whatever background she came from, she would have a hard time there.

He'd figured she'd end up in Gryffindor, like Lily. Secretly he'd hope maybe Ravenclaw, at least then she'd just grow indifferent towards him, not grown to hate him.

When the hat placed her in Hufflepuff, he knew beyond a shadow of a doubt it was the right place for her. The girl was the embodiment of light in an otherwise very dark world, it was the perfect placement.

In the back of his mind he knew just as she had, if she'd been placed in Gryffindor it'd be the end of them.

Since the girl was two years below him they didn't share any classes together.

She always made sure to invite him to eat with her during breakfast, Or to study in the library during lunch though.

It was during one of those morning breakfasts at the beginning of the year that she first mentioned it to him.

'I want to start my OWL's in two years.' She said out of the blue

Severus nearly choked on his omelette.
'What?!' He asked her

'I want to start my OWL's in two years' she said again slower as if he just couldn't understand her words.
'A few in third, a few in fourth, and then I'll finish that last few classes in fifth. I already talked to Professor Sprout about it, and she said as long as I can come up with a solid schedule for it without overwhelming myself, she'll approve.'

He looked at her like she was insane
'How is that even going to work? You'll have to cram five years of knowledge into your brain in three...'

She smiled at him sheepishly
'With lots of help?'

He groaned, he knew exactly where this was going.

'Me and that Lion boy?'

'Please? Remus is really nice! And-'
'His friends are assholes'

She narrowed her eyes at him
'Language'
Severus scoffed

Her language was worse than his for an eleven year old.

'They literally call me Snivellus, and I'm not even sure if it's just a play on words, or if I actually snivel around a lot.'

'Ok yes, the others are pretty much bullies I get it, but Remus is really nice and he'll be a big help to me. Please? Just during lunch. And he'll only come sometimes, not a lot, I promise!'
