Chapter 14 - New start

Chapter 13 - “Thanks Chase” Tom told the nurse as he helped Nathan back on bed. “Anything for my little patient” Chase said before going. “Will he be fine?” Tom asked. “He will, Tom. You’ll fix him. We will fix him” Max said. Siva and Jay nodded to Tom. “I hope so boys. I really hope so” Tom said, patting Nathan’s leg.

He could only hope that his brother be fine. But will he be fine?

It had been a long time since Nathan stayed in the hospital. Thankfully, soon Nathan got discharged from the hospital and Tom was allowed to take his baby brother home. Nathan was more than happy to leave the hospital. “Buddy, you’re really going?” Chases asked. “Yes” Nathan giggled as Chase helped him out of his hospital gown. Chase was about to get a fresh diaper on Nathan when the boy wiggled away, “no.” “Come on baby, it’s only until you come back to remove the stitches.” Nathan sighed but didn’t argue again as he let Chase diaper him and helped him in fresh clothes. “Hey, you ready to go?” Tom asked as he walked in the hospital room.  “Yes” Nathan said, hurriedly getting in Tom’s arms. “I’ll miss you, buddy” Chase chuckled. “I’ll miss you too, Chase. Bye” Nathan waved to Chase as Tom carried him out.

Nathan had been very happy to return back home. The boys, Kelsey and Nareesha were all waiting at home for Nathan to return. “Hey buddy, we had been waiting for you” Max said as he gave Nathan a hug. Nathan giggled as he was passed from arms to arms going from Max to Jay and then to Siva. He gladly accepted the hug from the girls before making grabby hands at Tom again who chuckled and took him back. They all noticed that Nathan was being clingy to Tom again but as Nathan had just been through a lot, none of the boys or the girls commented on how the boy wanted attention and affection from his brother.

Tom also wasn’t complaining about Nathan being clingy. As long as Nathan clung to him, it was much better for him to keep an eye on his baby brother. It started with Tom keeping a watch every day on Nathan. As Nathan still had his stitches on, he couldn’t move much so that became a reason why he wasn’t able to cut. Tom along with the boys had taken to monitor what Nathan eats and was helping the boy against his eating disorder also. Also, the boy was quite happy with his current situation right now. He was much away from his parents and had finally found love and comfort from his big brother.

After getting his stitches removed and finally saying goodbye to Chase, Nathan was slowly getting back to his normal life. He’d even gotten out of the diapers slowly. He enjoyed going to watch movies with Jay or go to picnic with Max or just go on stroll with Siva. His life slowly was getting back on track. That gave Tom enough time to think about what to do further. He had been thinking about getting Nathan in school but he was a little worried about how the boy would react.

He called the boys down while Nathan was still asleep. When he told the boys that he wanted Nathan to go to school, the boys had all thought that it was a good idea! But they all knew that Nathan might be a little wary of school since his past records were not so good. “Do you know why Nathan had been getting so many bad remarks?” Siva asked Tom. “I’m sure it’s not his fault and even if he did that, it’s my parents’ faults mostly. But I’m sure we can monitor that now” Tom explained. “Right but who is telling Nathan about it?” Max asked. “You should Tom.” Jay said.

Tom had tried talking to Nathan after dinner that night. And to say that Nathan didn’t take it well. “Please buddy, you need to go to school” Tom said. “No, I don’t want to” Nathan whined. “Listen bud, just for this one day. Just go tomorrow and then if you don’t like it we’ll see, okay?” Tom said. Nathan wanted to say no again. But he didn’t want to upset his brother so he agreed. But that didn’t mean he was happy with the decision.

Standing in the shower the next day, Nathan had his razor in his hand. He had hidden one from the boys after they had raided his room and removed every pointed object that he could use to hurt himself. Nathan was nervous, scared and a single cut would help him calm down but somehow he couldn’t bring himself to cut. “Bud, you want a white t-shirt or the new one we bought. Personally, I think the white one suits you well” Tom said, picking out Nathan’s clothes for school.  His brother’s voice wasn’t allowing him to cut and sighing, Nathan hid the razor back again before joining his brother out.

School had been a bundle of nervousness for Nathan. But he was glad for Tom being by his side at every time. But when Tom got him enrolled in school and was about to leave him there for the day, Nathan couldn’t help but cling to his brother. “What’s wrong?” Tom asked. “Don’t go” Nathan said softly. “You’ll be fine buddy. I’ll be there to pick you up after” Tom promised as he left Nathan at school. Making his first steps to the class proved more difficult to Nathan now. He was introduced as the new guy in class and was guided to an empty spot. Nathan cast a look at the boy sitting next to him but the boy didn’t even make eye contact with him. All adding to his nervousness!

Nathan had always been a target for bullies and he doubted that his new school would be different from the last one. This time also, he found himself cornered at lunch time by some guys in his class only. “So, you’re the new guy?” the healthy looking boy asked. Nathan nodded not moving from the spot where he was standing. “How about I give you a welcome gift?” the guy said, laughing as he drew his fist to punch Nathan.

Nathan closed his eyes waiting for the punch but nothing came. Opening his eyes, Nathan found the guy who he had sat next to, blocking the punch. “Leave him alone Mitch” the boy said. Mitch, the healthy looking boy looked like he wanted to say something else but spotting a teacher walking near them, he simply turned back on his heels, not before muttering to Nathan, “I’ll get you boy and maybe this time Alexis won’t be here to save you, huh?” Nathan shuddered at that statement.

“Hey… Listen! Alexis, right? I’m Nathan. Thank you for…” Nathan trailed off as he ran after Alexis. “Listen just stay away from Mitch. He is not a good guy and those two with him Lars and Sven are his stooges, so be careful with them.” Alexis said. “I will… Thanks” Nathan said. This time Alexis offered Nathan a smile, “so you’re new to the school, huh? Want a tour?” Alexis asked. “Sure” Nathan agreed, walking next to Alexis as the boy explained every details of the school.

With Alexis as his newly found friend, Nathan found that this school wasn’t so bad. Well, except for Mitch, Lars and Sven! True to his promise, Tom was waiting for Nathan outside the school. “Hey buddy, how was school?” Tom asked as they got in the car. “Nice. I made a friend too” Nathan said, ‘an enemies too’ Nathan thought. “Great” Tom cheered.

That night, snuggling in Tom as the boys watched a movie, Nathan found himself smiling along the boys. This time the smile wasn’t forced. It was a new life, a new school, new friends! It was a new start. Maybe now things would be good?
