Ages of Aly and Harumi as of this chapter

Aly: 15

Harumi: 12

My life fell apart when the Great Devourer attacked my city.

It was a terrifying time, and the memories of it still haunt me to this day,

Since I remember it so clearly...

Flashback to a younger Aly:

"At last, the Sword of Fortune. "

The day had been as peaceful as ever; the sun was shining through the windows and I was playing with my best friend; Harumi. "Not so fast, Ninja!" I exclaimed, going along with this little game Harumi had made with her Ninja dolls.

I had been around her house for the past few hours, and we drew pictures of the Ninja and played with her dolls. She loved it when I came over since we had a lot of fun playing and drawing. She was only eleven, but I didn't mind that.

"Aly! Come on, play with meeee." Rumi caught my attention. I chuckled and went back to playing her game. "I am the Shadow Thief, and I'll never let you have it." I spoke as the red Ninja. "Then we battle because Ninja never quit. Hyah." Harumi held up her Green Ninja toy and they started their battle.

She hit her doll against mine and accidentally knocked him out of my hand, sending him crashing into the window and knocking over a small stack of drawings. "Hey!" I laughed with her. "Hehe, sorry." She smiled at me as I reclaimed my toy, ready for them to battle again. "Be careful you two, we wouldn't want someone to get hurt." Harumi's mother called out to us from the couch.

And that's when it happened...

The ground started to rumble and shake, which made Rumi stop and look at her mother. "What was that?" She shakily asked me. "I'm not sure." I told her as she curled up towards me, and I kept her close.

The ground shook again and my friend whimpered, scared. That's when her father burst through the front door. "What in the name of Ninjago was that?" He gasped while rushing over. I quickly handed him his daughter as Harumi's mom turned on the TV.

"A snake of a rather unusual size is attacking Ninjago city. If you are watching this now, please leave the city at once." Gayle Gossip was on the TV, informing our city of the danger we were in. Suddenly, a terrifying sound echoed through the TV. Or at least, that's what we thought.

Out of nowhere the room became dark and our attention shot to the window. Something huge and scaly had blocked the sun, and I had one guess what it was. "We need to leave now." Harumi's father instructed us while rushing out the door with his daughter and wife.

I quickly scanned the floor for my belongings, and I spotted things I could quickly grab. I scooped up my bag and shoved Harumi's dolls inside. I snatched up my sketchbook and pencils just before rushing out the door. I had made it out just in time as the whole apartment collapsed.

I dashed out the door and met up with Harumi again who was clinging onto her father's arm. They had stopped beside the elevator door, and I peered over their shoulders to have a look. The door was sealed shut as the building shook again, frightening those around us. "We'll take the stairwell." Harumi's father instructed us while guiding his family down the hall. I stayed back and began to search the halls for my parents.

I made a risky move and ran to our apartment in search of them. Once I arrived, everything had been knocked over and broken. "Mom! Dad!" I called out for them, but there was no response. "Mom! Dad!" I tried again, but still nothing. I figured they had already made it out so I rushed back to the elevator to find people hurrying inside.
