Two days later,Marjan and I were sitting in the truck with the rest of the 126 as we had gotten a call about a kid who got stuck in a corn silo.
"How the hell does a kid end up getting stuck in a grain silo 50 feet above ground?" T.k asked.
"It's called a walk of grain. People go up into the silo and they stomp around on the corn' cause its a cheap way to dislodge it from the drain". Judd explained.
"Sounds like you've run a few of these, Judd". Owen commented.
"Yeah, we lose a few people a year to them down here. You get that much grain together, it's like quicksand". He added.
"So if he's already up to his chest, how long do we have to get him out?" Owen asked.
"Ten minutes at the most, but that depends on the air pockets, but you also can't pull him out too fast, or you'll rip him in half". Judd warned.
"But, i-its corn". T.k added.
"Yeah, its corn. It weighs 1,200 pounds per cubic yard. It's like having four refrigerators on top of Every part of your body". I explained.
"All right, here's the deal. When we get there, Judd's gonna run the call, all right? You do what he says when he says it". Owen informed.
"Copy that". We chorused.
"All right, let's raise the area! Everybody with high-angle training goes up! Let's get the kid out of here! Owen yelled when we exited the truck.
I grabbed a steel shield and followed my brother up the ladder.
"All right, listen up, y'all! This is what we're gonna do! You get in there, you put your platform down. You stay put! One false step could cause an air pocket. Nobody's feet touches the corn!" Judd explained.
"Copy that".
We began climbing the silo ladder until we were inside.
"I got eyes on him, Cap". Judd informed over the walkie.
"Hey, try to stay relaxed, okay? Stay calm". He yelled towards the kid.
"Remember, nobody steps on the corn!" Judd said as we walked along the platforms to get to the kid.
"Hey, pass one of these down!" He yelled, signaling for more platforms.
"Please, hurry". The kid pleaded as I stood on the nearest platform from him.
"Don't worry kid. We'll get you out of there". I assured him.
"Got it. Got hands on. All right, Marjan". I heard Paul say as my brother and I aided the kid.
"Hey, give me the horse collar". I yelled.
"Copy that". Marjan winked at me and I smiled at her.
"Harness flying in". Judd said handing it to me.
"All right, partner. You okay? We're gonna get you out of here. You got a lot of pressure on your chest right now. You've got to try and relax". I told the kid as I placed the harness around him.
"Hard to breathe". He gasped.
"It's gonna be okay". I assured him.
"Tighten that, right now!" Judd yelled over at Paul.
"Hold that one right there". Paul said handing Marjan a shield.
"Watch that rope". Marjan called.
"All right, got another coming in". Judd informed.
"Putting it behind you". I told him as they placed the shields around him.
