Warm Spark

Is summer here already?

It's nearly eighty degrees!

But trees are still birthing leaves

While others are dropping seeds

White sycamore twins are bare

Wild violets flush garden beds

Daffodils fading in heat

Spurge mounds with chartreuse round heads

Hoping to catch wayward vole

Old gray cat sits by brush pile

Squirrels scold her from overhead

Old cat watches for awhile

And when she finally gives up

Heading home where supper waits?

She moves so very slowly

I wonder if old joints ache

Hostas are poking from ground

Weeding a hazardous chore

One mis-step and hear a crunch

New stem flattened to ground's floor

Pansies, violas were bought

For color in garden bed

Forgot deer think they taste good

Now in pots on deck instead

Wind gusts make willow bush dance

Wild swirling bobbing display

Plant's motion lightens my heart

And adds warm spark to my day
