Potting soil and plastic cups
Dozens of packets of seeds
Black marker captures details
Clear water that each seed needs
Soon life sprouts in each small cup
Two green leaves turn towards bright sun
So many steps still to do
Before flowers bloom and stun
So many things can go wrong
In the life of a new sprout
Some fall back into brown dirt
And new life quickly snuffed out
But most reach for bright sunlight
Stem thickens as sprout grows tall
New leaves feed on sunlight's feast
As roots dig and spread and sprawl
From windowsill, to wood deck
Sprouts must learn to live outside
Feel soft winds and full sunlight
Before garden beds are tried
Time has come to graduate
To grow roots in garden beds
Fight nature's pests; find a way
Grow strong and set flower heads
Accept help of bumblebees
And other helpful insects
Create seeds of life to come
Which all life on earth reflects
See our lives in each new sprout
That must struggle to survive
Some will live and some will fall
In struggle to stay alive
For no life has it easy
Not even a little sprout
And every life must struggle
It's what life is all about
