Birds of spring are quiet
Birdsong rarely drifts on breeze
Babies raised; no need to sing
No mates do they need to please
Humid heat still saps my strength
Often hide within my home
Where machine creates cool drafts
Find comfort in red brick dome
But in cool early morning
Before sun drifts over trees
I steal some quiet moments
Stroll garden with bumblebees
Hummingbird zips in circles
Sipping from flower teacups
Hear hum of vibrating wings
Delight in dawn's pick-me-up
Overhead blue jays complain
See no peanuts on deck rail
They must wait a little bit
As I explore my garden's trail
No cucumbers on green vine
But okra is growing fast
Big yellow blooms promise more
Harvest of okra will last
Heart shaped leaves of spring's violets
Create clumps of deep green rugs
A rustle under green leaves
Hope lizard is catching bugs
Loud calls pierce cool morning air
Reminding me blue jays wait
Lay out a line of peanuts
Blue and white feathers pulsate
