The last days of summer are here
Loud cicadas rattle the air
Tree colors are starting to fade
Precursor to autumn's bright flare
Hot days, cool days, hot days again
Transition is not a straight path
Nature laughs at our calendar
New season is not about math
Change will come when Nature's ready
We pivot with her ebb and flow
Dress in layers we can remove
We wait for new colors to show
Butterflies begin to arrive
Sip nectar from late summer blooms
As they migrate to warmer zones
Joining birds in a southward zoom
Hear dry rustle within tall trees
And odd leaf is spiraling down
Garden plants have started to wane
Watching leaves turn from green to brown
Asters are reaching for the sky
They will greet the first days of Fall
With sprays of soft blue purple blooms
Skippers will feast on nectar haul
Relish these last days of summer
Snip green chives to mix with cream cheese
Savor the end of the harvest
Last delights before killing freeze
Time to check my old hat and gloves
Mend holes or replace with new ones
My old coat will just have to do
Find warmth in my fashion reruns
