Chapter Sixty-Seven: Undo
*~*~*~*
"Rhys is safely back home," Mark announced as he joined me in the living room. My heels and dress having already been abandoned in favor of sweatpants and a tank top.
"The other three are all in their rooms. Chris and Mellie are asleep and Joel's finishing up some homework," I shared as he took a seat next to me on the couch. "How are you holding up?"
"What do you mean?" His brows furrowed at my question.
"Mark, you agreed to let one of your kids move across the country to New York tonight." I reminded him. "That's not something you can just brush off and be okay with. Talk to me."
"I'm fine, Beth. I am," he tried to assure me as he pulled me closer to his side, letting me rest my head against his chest. With my ear pressed flat against his shirt I was able to hear the steady beating of his heart, the sound providing me with a sense of ease. "Robbins was right when she said this would be what was best for Sofia and Torres. Besides, it's not like we'll never see her again. She'll be back next weekend, and then again for Christmas. Not to mention we'll alternate summers and school years."
"That's true. But we both know it won't be the same," I noted.
"It won't," he agreed. "But we'll make the best of it. I'm sure the kids wouldn't mind taking trips to New York every once in a while. They'll get to see where I grew up. Even meet Ms. Shepherd--"
"Might wanna hold back on that for awhile, unless you wanna see me punch her." I warned, my mind flashing back to how heartbroken Amelia had been earlier. Hurt that her mother and older sisters had refused to come to her wedding.
"I'll keep that in mind," he chuckled. Before either of us could say another word though we were interrupted by the sound of my phone ringing from where it rested on the coffee table. "Avery already freaking out about what to do with a baby?"
"Give him credit. He's been great helping out with Mellie and Chris," I pulled away from his embrace to grab my phone. When I saw the name filling the screen though I could feel my brows furrow in confusion.
"Who is it?" He asked.
"Meredith," I muttered before accepting the call, bringing the phone to my ear. "If this is a lecture about me skipping out on the wedding early, give me a break. I wanted to see my new niece."
"It's not that," Meredith assured me. "I'm on my way to your house right now. I'll be there in five minutes, be ready to go."
"Go where?" I asked, my words catching Mark's attention.
"DeLuca was admitted to the ER," she informed me.
"What the hell?" I questioned. "What happened to him?"
"Just be ready. I'll explain things later," she said before ending the call.
"What happened?" Mark asked as I got up from the couch. I could hear him following me as I made a beeline towards the closet by the front door. Searching until I found a pair of sneakers and a hoodie.
"DeLuca was brought into the ER. That's all I know," I shared with him as I pulled on the sneakers. "Meredith's on her way to get me right now. I'll let you know when I have more information."
"You guys going to the hospital?" He guessed.
"I don't know," I shrugged. "I'll keep my phone on me. Call me if you hear anything or if something comes up with the kids. I'll try and get back as soon as I can."
